Rock falls in PSAC opener at Seton Hill, 10-9

Slippery Rock battled to a one-goal defeat, 10-9, Tuesday at Seton Hill in The Rock's PSAC opener.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team came up one goal short for the second straight game in falling 10-9 at Seton Hill in The Rock's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday evening.

Slippery Rock falls to 3-3 overall and opens the year at 0-1 in the PSAC standings, while Seton Hill improves to 6-2 overall and picks up its first conference win to move to 1-2 in the league standings. SRU had a two-game win streak snapped last Saturday in a 17-16 overtime defeat at Shepherd.

Tuesday's meeting was the first between Slippery Rock and Seton Hill as rivals in the PSAC after the two teams did not meet last year.

The game was tight throughout with the big difference in each half standing as Seton Hill's ability to put together a 3-0 run midway through each period.

The game was tied at 2-2 early before the Griffins pushed out to a 5-2 lead. Slippery Rock rallied to tie the game at 5-5 but Seton Hill added another with just 31 seconds before halftime to lead 6-5 at the break.

The Rock scored the first goal of the second half to tie it at 6-6 but another 3-0 run made it 9-6 in favor of the hosts with 25:42 to play.

The teams traded goals to make it 10-7 with 14:39 to play and neither team could tally another goal until inside the final three minutes. Slippery Rock scored with 2:16 to play and again with 1:30 to play, but couldn't find the equalizer as time expired.

Paige Costantino led the offensive attack for Slippery Rock with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Erin Wilcox added three goals and Kaytlin Callaghan chipped in two goals.

Anna-Marie Warrington handed out two assists, Jess Verbic scored one goal and Katie Cook added an assist and a team-high three draw controls to round out The Rock's top performers.

Hannah Houde made 15 saves between the pipes in the losing effort to drop to 2-3 overall on the season.

Seton Hill was led by three goals and two assists from Emily Fagan and four goals from Emma Simmers. Melanie Morget made one save and allowed five goals in the first half and was credited with the win. Meghan Hollar played the second half and made two saves and allowed four goals.

Seton Hill finished the game with advantages of 39-17 in shots, 20-15 in ground balls and 15-6 in draw controls.

Tuesday's game was the third in a five-game road stretch for Slippery Rock, which will visit No. 10 West Chester Friday for a 3 p.m. PSAC match and will then play at Shippensburg Saturday at 3 p.m. in another conference tilt.
