GREENSBURG, Pa. – D"Asia Chambers tied her career-high with 31 points to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 62-60 win at Seton Hill Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action.
The win improves The Rock to 6-19 overall and 3-12 in PSAC-West games this season and gives the team a season sweep over Seton Hill (12-13, 4-11 PSAC) in the Griffins first year as PSAC members.
Chambers was sensational in the game, shooting better than 80 percent from the field and connecting on 13-of-15 shot attempts. Her most important points were the last four she scored. After Seton Hill rallied back from a 10-point second half deficit to tie the game, Chambers knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:03 to play that put The Rock out in front for good. She then hit a late free throw to increase the lead to 62-60 and pulled down the defensive rebound that ended the game.
The 31 points tied a career-high for Chambers, who has now scored 30 or more points in five games this season. She also grabbed nine rebounds.
Chambers was joined by
Jazmyne Frost in leading the attack. Frost finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds as the pair of forwards combined to score 45 of The Rock's 62 points.
Aidan Geise added five points to cap the top scorers.
Slippery Rock enjoyed one of its best shooting performances of the season, connecting on 50 percent of its attempts from the field (25-of-50) and 40 percent of shots from beyond the 3-point arc (6-of-15). The Rock was 6-of-12 at the free throw line and outscored Seton Hill 32-20 in the paint.
The Griffins were led by 16 points each from Katie Gattuso and Tiara Stossel. Paige Aviani added 15 points.
Seton Hill shot 35.1 percent from the field (20-of-57), 41.7 percent from 3-point (10-of-24) and 83.3 percent at the free throw line (10-of-12).
Neither team could build much momentum in the first half as each squad traded short spurts. The Rock led by six, 29-23, with 1:29 to play before the break but Seton Hill closed the period on a 5-0 run to cut it to 29-28.
The Rock opened the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 39-30 lead with 17:14 to play, but Seton Hill answered with a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the half, 40-39, with 12:35 to play.
Slippery Rock responded with a 14-3 run to push the advantage out to a game-high 10 points, 53-43, with 7:02 to play.
The Griffins chipped away at the deficit and capped a 13-3 run of their own with a 3-pointer that tied the game at 56-56 with 2:23 to play.
Chambers 3-pointer answered on the next possession to put Slippery Rock in front 59-56. Geise added a layup on the next possession to keep it a 3-point game, but a pair of free throws from Seton Hill cut it to one at 61-60 with 1:05 to play.
Chamber knocked down her 31st point of the game from the free throw line with 27 seconds left to make it 62-60. Seton Hill had two good looks at the tying points, but Chambers snared a rebound as time expired to seal the win.
Saturday's game was the final road game of the 2013-14 season for Slippery Rock, which will close the year Wednesday when Indiana (Pa.) visits Morrow Field House for a 6 p.m. game.
