SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior forward
D'Asia Chambers recorded a 25-point, 15-rebound "double-double" Wednesday night to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 69-61 win over visiting Kutztown University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action.
The win ended a modest two-game losing skid for The Rock, who improved their season record to 3-11. Kutztown saw its record drop to 5-8.
Chambers was one of two Rock players who recorded a double-digit scoring total as senior center
Jazmyne Frost finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore point guard
Erica Aiello added nine points and five assists for the winners and junior forward
Danielle Garroutte chipped in eight points in a substitute role.
Natalya Lee led a three-player, double-digit scoring attack for Kutztown with 15 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Bonenberger and Advia Campbell added 12 points each, with Bonenberger grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds and Campbell snaring six rebounds.
The Rock shot 43% (23 of 54) from the field, 34% (6 of 18) from 3-point range and 81% (17 of 21) from the foul line. SRU won the rebounding battle by a 42-39 margin but had more turnovers, 17 to 13.
Kutztown, meanwhile, shot 35% (23 of 66) from the field, 27% (4 of 15) from 3-point range and 58% (11 of 19) from the foul line.
The teams traded leads throughout the first half of action with Kutztown holding a 32-29 lead at halftime. The guests had their largest lead, a five-point, 15-10 advantage with 13:50 left to play in the first half. Conversely, The Rock enjoyed a six-point, 23-17, lead with 8:30 left before intermission.
SRU opened the second half of action with an 8-0 run to take a 37-32 lead into the first final-half media timeout.
The Rock never trailed thereafter and expanded their lead to a high-water mark of 13 points, 62-49, with four minutes left to play. Kutztown outscored the hosts by a 12-7 margin in the final four minutes to set the final margin.
Wednesday's concluded SRU's six-game "crossover" schedule and gave the Green and White a 2-4 record against teams from the PSAC's Eastern Division.
The Rock start a string of 12 consecutive PSAC-West games with a 1 p.m. date Saturday in Edinboro. SRU is then idle for a week before hosting Mercyhurst in another 1 p.m. game Jan. 18.
