Millersville downs Rock women, 68-55

Slippery Rock led at halftime, but cold streak late in the game allowed Millersville to rally for a 68-55 win Friday in PSAC crossover action.

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team led by one-point at halftime, but a scoreless stretch of 9:20 late in the second half allowed hosting Millersville University to rally for a 68-55 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action Friday at Pucillo Gymnasium.

The Rock (2-10) led 33-32 at halftime after Erica Aiello knocked down a jumper at the buzzer, but Millersville (6-5) put together a 10-0 run late in the game that capped a 19-4 run to pull away for the win.

The Marauders capitalized as Slippery Rock went ice cold in the shooting department, failing to register any points for a stretch of 9:20. Slippery Rock scored with 11:23 to play to cut its deficit to 51-45, but failed to register points again until there was 2:03 to play. Despite scoring 10 points in the final two minutes, The Rock could not overcome the deficit.

Slippery Rock was paced by a game-high 18-point scoring effort from D'Asia Chambers, who also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Aidan Geise chipped in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Erica Aiello added eight points and five assists.

The Rock's leading scorer, Jazmyne Frost, was held to seven points and four rebounds before fouling out of the game.

Slippery Rock shot 33.3 percent from the field after going 44.0 percent in the first half and 25.0 percent in the second half. The Rock connected on 19-of-57 total attempts, including 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc and was 73.3 percent at the free throw line (11-of-15).

Millersville placed three players in double figures, led by 15 points from Carly Gallagher. Yasmin Cooper added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds and Alexis Martin chipped in 10 points.

Millersville shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-of-54), 35.0 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-of-20) and 73.1 percent at the free throw line (19-of-26) after making four more free throws than Slippery Rock's total number of attempts in the game. The Marauders also posted a 40-36 edge in total rebounds.

Friday's game marked the first action for both teams since Dec. 21 and the first of back-to-back games they will play this weekend. Slippery Rock will travel to Shippensburg Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip.

The Rock returns home to close the PSAC crossover portion of the schedule Jan. 8 with a 5:30 p.m. game against Kutztown. From there on out, the remainder of the schedule will count in the PSAC-West division standings.
