Slow start dooms Rock women at IUP

Slippery Rock couldn't overcome a slow start in suffering a 66-50 loss at Indiana (Pa.) Saturday.

INDIANA, Pa. – A frigid shooting performance in the first half proved too difficult to recover from for the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team in a 66-50 loss Saturday at Indiana University (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action.

The Rock outscored the Crimson Hawks 33-28 in the second half but could not recover from a 20.7 percent shooting efficiency in the first half that netted just 17 points.

Indiana snapped a five-game losing skid and improved to 12-6 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC-West with the win. Slippery Rock drops to 4-14 overall and 1-7 in league play. Saturday's game was the final in the first round of divisional games and leaves just eight games remaining on the schedule for each team.

D'Asia Chambers was a bright spot for Slippery Rock, recording a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jazmyne Frost added 14 points and seven rebounds and Aidan Geise chipped in eight points.

Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field after shooting 48.3 percent in the second half. The Rock was just 6-of-29 in the first half and finished 20-of-58 in the game. SRU made just two 3-pointers in the game, finishing 2-of-14 for a 14.3 percent efficiency. The Rock was 8-of-12 from the free throw line (66.7 percent).

Indiana was led by 22 points from Leslie Stapleton, who connected on five 3-point field goals. Marita Mathe added 11 points and Ashley Stoner chipped in 10 points.

The Crimson Hawks shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-of-54), 36.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-of-19) and 63.0 percent at the free throw line (17-of-27).

Slippery Rock battled in the second half to cut into the 21-point halftime deficit, but could get no closer than 11 points.

The Rock opens the second round of PSAC-West games Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. game at Clarion.
