Rock field hockey downs Assumption, 3-1

The Slippery Rock University field hockey team rebounded from an overtime loss Saturday with a decisive 3-1 victory over Assumption Sunday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team earned its first win of the season with a decisive 3-1 victory over Assumption College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Junior Lindsay Brown scored her second goal is as many games and added an assist, while freshmen Renee Rosenblum and Megan McKay found the back of the cage for their first collegiate goals.
 
The Rock dominated the first half, scoring all three of their goals and outshooting the Greyhounds 6-1 to take a 3-0 lead to the break. Rosenblum connected off a feed from Brown in the 11th minute to give Slippery Rock the 1-0 advantage. McKay stuffed home a rebound six minutes later to push the lead to 2-0. Brown snuck a shot past the Assumption goalkeeper in the 25th minute for The Rock's final goal of the match.
 
Assumption stepped up their offensive presence in the second half and outshot The Rock 10-6. The Greyhounds registered their lone score in the 42nd minute on Stacia Tympanick's goal from Paige Anderson.
 
Starting junior goalie Courtney Lee held the Greyhounds scoreless in the first half to pick up her first win of the 2013 season. Sophomore goalie Carlee DuMars entered at the break, making seven saves and allowing just one goal to preserve the win.
 
Assumption goalie Lauren Neilan was credited with the loss after allowing three goals and recording six saves.
 
Slippery Rock was edged in penalty corners 14-8, but posted overall advantages of 12-11 in shots and 8-6 in saves.
 
The Rock (1-1) returns to action when they host Mansfield University Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
