No. 10 Rock toppled at No. 9 Kutztown, 5-3

The tenth-ranked Slippery Rock field hockey team (3-4, 0-1) fell on the road to #9 Kutztown (4-3, 1-0) in its PSAC opener Friday, 5-3.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The tenth-ranked Rock field hockey team fell on the road in its PSAC opener against #9 Kutztown, 5-3 Friday afternoon.

The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Erin Reynolds in the 15th minute and Julia Snyder in the 25th minute.

Haley Martin connected on a feed from Lindsay Brown in the 30th minute to cut Slippery Rock's deficit to one heading into the half.

The Rock came out firing in the second half. Allison Shade scored her first goal of the season to tie the game in the 37th minute before Brown sent home a feed from Courtney Bradshaw to give Slippery Rock the lead, 3-2 in the 40th minute.

Kutztown would settle in behind the stellar play of goalkeeper Kayla Denlinger, who made 14 saves in the second half.

Reynolds added her second goal of the game in the 46th minute to knot things up at 3-3. Anna Behm scored what would be the game winning goal in the 53rd minute, before adding a second goal in the 69th minute.

Brown led The Rock with a goal and an assist, while Martin and Shade picked up a goal apiece. Bradshaw recorded an assist and Baylee Childress and Lauren Shideler each picked up a defensive save.

Courtney Lee (2-2) started in goal for The Rock and received the no-decision after allowing one goal and making two saves. Carlee DuMars (1-2) entered at the break and received the loss after allowing three goals on three saves.

Denlinger allowed three goals, but made an impressive 20 saves to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Despite the loss, Slippery Rock dominated much of the game. The Rock held advantages of 32-12 in total shots, 23-10 in shots on goal and 14-5 in penalty corners.

No. 10 Slippery Rock returns to action Saturday, Sept. 28 at East Stroudsburg in PSAC play. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
