SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team (3-2) upset No. 7 Bloomsburg (2-3) 3-2 Wednesday evening at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The win gives The Rock its first ever win over the Huskies, snapping a string of 38 losses dating back to 1983.

Lauren Geiser opened the scoring midway through the first half, connecting on a breakaway feed from Allison Shade to give The Rock the early 1-0 advantage in the 18th minute.

Felicia Domenici answered for Bloomsburg, capitalizing on a cross from Sam Peters in the 22nd minute to tie the game at 1-1.

The score would remain tied at 1-1 through halftime, before Courtney Bradshaw sent a feed from Shade into the back of the cage to give Slippery Rock the lead at 2-1 in the 40th minute.

The Rock stayed aggressive and Gina Smarrelli scored what would become the game-winning goal less than four minutes later on a penalty corner from Lindsay Brown to make it 3-1 in the 44th minute.

The Huskies answered quickly with a penalty shot goal from Brittany Matthews in the 45th minute to keep pressure on The Rock, but could not complete the comeback thanks to stellar defensive play and goalkeeping from SRU.

Lauren Shideler made a key defensive save in the second half to keep the lead for Slippery Rock. It was the third defensive save of the game for the hosts, as Baylee Childress and Kelsey Gustafson each record one as well.

Shade finished the game with two assists. Geiser scored her first goal of the season while Smarrelli and Bradshaw each recorded their second goals of the season and Brown registered a point for the fifth time in as many games this fall.

Courtney Lee started the game in goal for The Rock, allowing one goal and recording two saves. Carlee DuMars took over at the break, allowing one goal and making two saves to record the win and improve her record to 1-1.

Megan Eppley received the loss for the Huskies after allowing three goals and recording five saves.

The Rock posted overall advantages of 11-6 in penalty corners and 7-5 in saves, but was edged in total shots 13-12.

Wednesday's game marked the fifth consecutive home game to open the season for Slippery Rock, which will play its first road game of 2013 when it travels to No. 3 Millersville Saturday for a noon match.
