Rock field hockey hosts No. 7 Bloomsburg Wednesday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will host No. 7 Bloomsburg Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Although both teams are members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, this match will not count towards the PSAC standings for either team.

Records: Slippery Rock enters Wednesday's game with a 2-2 overall record and is coming off a 2-1 loss Saturday against Kutztown after the Golden Bears scored on each of the penalty strokes they were awarded.

Bloomsburg enters Wednesday's game with the same record as Slippery Rock at 2-2 overall. The Huskies are riding a two-game winning streak with wins over Bellarmine and Lindenwood.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 11-7 through four games and is outshooting the opposition 76-42. Lindsay Brown leads the team with four goals and three assists, while freshman Megan McKay has added three goals. Kelsey Gustafson, Courtney Bradshaw, Gina Smarrelli and Renee Rosenblum have all found the cage once and Meghan McKinney has an assist to cap the point scorers. McKinney, Baylee Childress and Lauren Hart each have one defensive save.

Scouting the Huskies: The No. 7 team in the country, Bloomsburg is outscoring opponents 13-7 through four games and outshooting the opposition 53-42. The Huskies are led by Felicia Domenici with six goals and Brittany Matthews with three goals and two assists. Candice Smith has two goals and two assists and Nikki Black leads the team with three assists. Sam Peters and Nikki Gattone each have one goal, while Stephanie Halsted, Courtney Haverly and Samantha Facciolla each have one assist to cap the point scorers.

Keepers: Courtney Lee and Carlee DuMars have played near even minutes in goal for SRU this year. Lee is 2-1 with a 1.47 goals against average and a .824 save percentage. DuMars is 0-1 and owns a 2.00 goals against average and a .733 save percentage.

Megan Eppley has started all four games in goal for Bloomsburg and is 2-2 with a 1.91 goals against average and a .696 save percentage.

Coaches: Julie Swiney, the reigning PSAC-West Coach of the Year, enters her fourth season at the helm for Slippery Rock. She led The Rock to back-to-back six-win seasons in 2010 and 2011, before matching the fourth best record in school history with eight wins in 2012. After not reaching the PSAC playoffs since 1987, Swiney led The Rock to its first playoff berth in 2011 and again in 2012. Before coming to Slippery Rock, Swiney served as American International's head coach from 2006-2009. A 2003 graduate of The College of William and Mary, Swiney was a three-year starter in field hockey for the Tribe. She led the Tribe to a Top-20 national ranking in each of her three seasons and a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament.

Nikki Rhoads is in her fourth season as the head field hockey coach for Bloomsburg. Rhoads came to Bloomsburg after spending six  years at Alvernia University. Her career head coach record stands at 76-27, including an impressive 51-10 in three plus years at Bloomsburg. In 2011, Rhoads received her second consecutive PSAC Eastern Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskies to a 19-1 record and their fourth straight PSAC Championship. A 2004 graduate of Bloomsburg, she was a standout player on teams that won two NCAA championships and two PSAC titles. Rhoads was a three-time All-American and All-PSAC selection. She is tied for 10th all-time in Bloomsburg history with 45 goals, 11th in assists with 24 and ninth in career points with 114.

Series: Bloomsburg owns a 38-0 advantage in the all-time series, including a 1-0 overtime win last year in Bloomsburg. SRU is looking for its first ever win against the Huskies.

Next Up: The Rock travels to Millersville, Pa., Saturday to take on No. 3 Millersville at 12 p.m.
