SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team fell to Kutztown 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The visiting Golden Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Erin Reynolds scored her third goal of the season on a penalty shot in the 8th minute.
Slippery Rock and Kutztown battled back and forth before
Gina Smarrelli connected on a feed from
Lindsay Brown in the closing seconds of the first half.
Kutztown would regain the lead early in the second half after being awarded another penalty shot in the 43rd minute. Reynolds capitalized by beating the goalkeeper with a blast to the top left corner of the cage for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
The Rock nearly tied things up in the closing minutes, but Brown's shot was denied on a defensive save from Kutztown's Jess Strohecker.
Brown extended her point streak to four games with an assist, while Smarrelli's goal was her first of the season.
Starting goalkeeper
Courtney Lee received a no-decision, allowing one goal in 35 minutes with three saves.
Carlee DuMars relieved Lee at halftime and received the loss after allowing one goal and recording one save.
Kutztown keeper Kayla Denlinger allowed one goal and made four saves to pick up her third win of the season.
Despite the loss, Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 13-9 in shots, 8-7 in shots on goal and 15-8 in penalty corners.
The loss drops Slippery Rock to 2-2, while Kutztown improves to 3-0. Although both schools are members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, the game will not be recorded as a conference game in the PSAC standings.
The Rock returns to action when they host Bloomsburg Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
