SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team set school records for total shots and shots on goal en route to defeating Mansfield University 5-1 Wednesday evening at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The two teams were forced to sit through a lightning delay that lasted nearly an hour midway through the second half.
Although the game featured two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams, it will be recorded as a non-conference game. Slippery Rock improves to 2-1 overall, while Mansfield drops to 2-1 overall.Â
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 4-0 lead at halftime and was in control throughout the entire game. The Rock finished with school records of 35 total shots and 30 shots on goal.
The previous school records according to all available data were 21 shots on goal and 28 total shots in a game. The 21 shots on target came against Mercyhurst in 2012 and the 28 total shots also came against Mansfield, during the 2011 season.
Lindsay Brown scored two goals and handed out one assist to bring her season tally to four goals and two assists.
Megan McKay added a pair of goals,
Kelsey Gustafson scored once and
Meghan McKinney tallied an assist to cap the point scorers for The Rock.
Courtney Lee earned the win in goal after playing the first 35 minutes and recording one save.
Carlee DuMars played the final 35 minutes and allowed one goal while recording one save.
Mansfield's goal came off the stick of reigning PSAC Player of the Week Taryn Schawillie, who found the cage on a breakaway early in the second half after taking a pass from Emily Willard.
Mansfield keeper Kristie Rollman took the loss after allowing four goals and recording 10 saves in 29 minutes of action. She was replaced by Laura Lawson, who allowed one goal and made 12 saves the rest of the way.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 35-4 in total shots, 30-4 in shots on goal and 12-2 in penalty corners.
Gustafson kicked off the scoring with her first tally of the season in the ninth minute after scoring off an assist from Brown.
McKay pushed the advantage out to 2-0 in the 14th minute with an unassisted tally and made it 3-0 in the 17th minute when she converted an assist from McKinney for her third goal of the year.
Brown gave The Rock a 4-0 lead in the 27th minute that would send the game to halftime with The Rock leading 4-0.
Schawillie notched Mansfield's only goal in the 38th minute to cut the Mountaineers deficit to 4-1, but Brown answered with her second of the game to make it 5-1 in the 48th minute.
After the lightning delay, which came with 16:18 left in the game, neither team could generate another scoring chance.
Wednesday's game was the third in a stretch of five consecutive home games for Slippery Rock to open the year. The Rock welcomes Kutztown Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
