ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst University women's basketball team used a 15-7 run over the final 7:09 to pull away for a 80-72 win over Slippery Rock University Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Saturday's game was close from the opening tip and featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes. The Lakers used a 7-0 run late in the game to break open a 65-65 game and carried that run into a 15-7 advantage as time wound down. Until that 7-0 run, neither team had managed more than a four-point lead at any point in the game.
Mercyhurst improves to 7-14 overall and 7-10 in league games, while Slippery Rock drops its eighth straight to fall to 4-17 overall and 3-14 in PSAC action.
The Rock put together one of its best halves of the season in the opening period, scoring 45 points to match Mercyhurst as the teams went into the break tied at 45-45.
Slippery Rock placed four players in double figures, led by a game-high 22-point performance from
Erinne Cunningham.
Erica Aiello scored 14 points handed out four assists in her third consecutive start.
Christa Wodarczyk netted 13 points for her second consecutive double figure output and
D'Asia Chambers added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Emilee Vitez rounded out the top performers with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Rock connected on 23-of-55 attempts from the field for a 41.8 percent shooting efficiency. SRU shot 35 percent from beyond the 3-point line (7-of-20) and had one its best free throw shooting performances of the season, hitting 19-of-22 from the line (86.4 percent).
Mercyhurst was led by Adrienne Kloecker with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Taylor Krusinski scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds and Abby Allen added 11 points.
The Lakers shot 40.3 percent from the field (25-of-62), 50 percent from beyond the 3-point line (12-of-24), 85.7 percent at the free throw line (18-of-21) and managed a 38-34 advantage in total rebounds.
Slippery Rock will play five more games this season with the next two at home. The Rock will welcome Lock Haven Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. game and will host a Hooping for a Cure event next Saturday, Feb. 16 against Edinboro. All fans wearing pink will be admitted free to that game.
