Lock Haven edges Rock in final minutes, 90-86

Slippery Rock set season-highs for field goal attempts, made free throws and rebounds, but Lock Haven broke a tie with under two minutes to play and held on for a 90-86 win Wednesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team set season highs for field goal attempts and rebounds, but Lock Haven University made big free throws in the final two minutes to emerge with a 90-86 win Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.

The game saw eight ties and eight lead changes and was all even at 80-80 with 1:50 to play before Lock Haven's Emily Daugherty knocked down a 3-pointer that would put the visitors in front for good. The lead grew to 85-80 before Alexas Brown scored six points on three straight possessions, but the Lady Eagles knocked down their free throws to seal the win.

Lock Haven moves one spot ahead of Slippery Rock in the league standings at 7-15 overall and 4-14 in PSAC games, while Slippery Rock slips into eighth at 4-14 overall and 3-15 in league games. Wednesday's loss eliminates The Rock from playoff contention while Lock Haven remains statistically alive, but will need to win its final four games and have Mercyhurst lose its last four.

Brown returned to the lineup after missing the last three games and proved to be a key asset for The Rock. She led all scorers in the game with 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Erinne Cunningham scored in double figures for the ninth time in the last 11 games and finished with 18 points. Megan Hardiman added nine points and nine rebounds and D'Asia Chambers added eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

Slippery Rock took a season-high 84 attempts from the field, including 35 3-pointers, and finished the game shooting 32.1 percent from the field (27-of-84), 22.9 percent from long range (8-of-35) and 80 percent at the free throw line, making a season-high 24-of-30 attempts .

The Rock grabbed 59 total rebounds, 13 more than any other game this season, but was still outrebounded as Lock Haven pulled down 61 boards.

Along with posting season-highs on the offensive side of the floor Slippery Rock also allowed more shots than it had all season as the Lady Eagles took 92 attempts from the floor. Lock Haven finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field (35-of-92), including 18.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line (4-of-22), and 80 percent from the free throw line (16-of-20).

Sami Lane finished the game with 21 points off the bench to lead the Lady Eagles. She also hit three crucial free throws in the final two minutes to preserve the win. Lane saw significant minutes when starting guard JJ Hilliard left the game with an injury in the first half. Marrysa Moyer added a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds and Kelsey Ryan also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Daugherty capped the top scorers with 15 points.

Lock Haven opened a nine-point lead just over five minutes into the game before Slippery Rock answered with a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 15-14 with 12:51 to play in the first half.

Lock Haven rallied to take a six-point lead, 25-19, but again Slippery Rock answered with a 6-0 run to tie it at 25-25 with 5:38 to play before the break. From there, the Lady Eagles went on a 12-3 run to open up a nine-point lead, 37-28 with 1:28 left in the period.

Slippery Rock scored the final four points of the half to trail 37-32 at the break.

The Rock opened the second half on a 10-2 run to regain the lead, 46-40, with 16:24 to play and maintained a lead until the 11:09 mark when Lock Haven took a 50-49 lead.

The teams traded points until it was tied at 55-55 with 10:18 to play. Lock Haven broke the tie and pushed out to an eight-point lead, 67-59, with 6:55 to play.

Slippery Rock slowly chipped away at the margin and battled back to tie the game at 78-78 with 2:10 to play. The teams traded scores to make it 80-80 with 1:50 to play and set up the finish. Daugherty's 3-pointer with 1:27 to play put Lock Haven up three points and the Lady Eagles would push it to five points with a pair of free throws from Moyer with 31 seconds left.

Brown converted the jumpers in the paint on each of the next three Rock possessions, but Lock Haven made its free throws after each score to stay out in front and preserve the win.

Slippery Rock has four games remaining in the 2012-13 season with two at home and two on the road. The Rock will host Edinboro Saturday at 1 p.m. in the annual Hooping for a Cure game. All fans wearing pink will be admitted free.

The Rock will travel to Gannon next Wednesday before closing the home schedule next Saturday against Indiana (Pa.) at 1 p.m. Seniors Erinne Cunningham, Emilee Vitez and Christa Wodarczyk will be honored prior to tip off.
