JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team came up just short, 90-86, in a double overtime thriller at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action.
The Rock never trailed in the second half until there was 19 seconds to play in regulation, but a pair of free throws from
Jazmyne Frost with five seconds left tied the game back up at 67-67 and sent it to overtime.
Slippery Rock jumped out to five point lead in the first overtime session before Pitt-Johnstown rallied back and tied it at 81-81 with a pair of free throws with five seconds left.
Foul trouble ended up being key, as Slippery Rock's two leading scorers missed the second overtime after fouling out. Pitt-Johnstown closed the final 1:40 of the second overtime with a 4-0 run to secure the 90-86 win.
The loss drops Slippery Rock to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in divisional play, while the Mountain Cats improve to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC-West. Saturday's meeting was the first between the two teams as conference foes.
D'Asia Chambers continued her incredible week by matching her career high set in the Wednesday game against No. 2 Gannon, finishing with a game-high 30 points on 12 made field goals. She nearly went for a triple-double, adding nine rebounds and seven steals in the game.
Jazmyne Frost just missed a double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds.
Erica Aiello added 11 points and seven assists. Chambers, Frost and Aiello all fouled out of the game before the end of the second overtime session.
Aidan Geise chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds and
Kara Houppert added six points in her first career start to cap the leading scorers.
Depth again was a factor for Slippery Rock, which got just three points off the bench compared to 28 points from Pitt-Johnstown's subs.
The Rock shot 43.5 percent from the field (30-of-69), 35.7 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (5-of-14) and 63.6 percent from the free throw line (21-of-33).
Pitt-Johnstown won the rebounding battle 40-30 and finished the game shooting 39.7 percent from the field (25-of-63), 33.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (7-of-21) and 70.2 percent at the free throw line (33-of-47).
The Mountain Cats placed five players in double figures, led by a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds from Nicole Carman. Leah Hansen chipped in 18 points, including the two free throws that tied the game with five seconds left in the first overtime. Kelsey Sleighter added 16 points, Jasmine Harper chipped in 15 and Kayla DeCriscio finished with 10.
Slippery Rock led 29-26 at halftime and pushed the lead out to double figures in the second half, 37-27 with 17:08 to play in regulation.
Pitt-Johnstown battled back to tie the game at 39-39 with 14:17 to play, but Slippery Rock pushed ahead again, taking a 61-53 lead with 4:56 to play.
The Mountain Cats put together a 12-4 run to tie the game at 65-65 with just 24 seconds to play and took their first lead of the half, 67-65, with just 19 seconds to play.
Frost knocked down both free throw attempts after being fouled in the paint with five seconds to go to send it to overtime tied at 67-67.
In the first overtime, Slippery Rock again jumped out to an early lead, 77-72 with just under two minutes to play. The Rock maintained the five point edge, 79-74 with 1:22 to play, but Pitt-Johnstown rallied with a 7-2 run that was capped off by a pair of free throws from Hansen that tied the game at 81-81 with just five seconds left, setting up the second overtime.
Depth proved to be the factor in the second overtime, as Slippery Rock struggled to score in the final two minutes without its three leading scorers in the game.
The Rock will not play any games during the university finals week next week and will return to action Dec. 17 with a home PSAC crossover game against East Stroudsburg at 5:30 p.m.
