Rock Senior Day spoiled in second half against No. 5 West Chester

Slippery Rock season finale undone in second half against defending national champion and fifth-ranked Golden Rams.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – No. 5 West Chester (13-4, 8-2) scored three goals in just over a minute of elapsed time to earn a 3-2 win and spoil the Senior Day of the Slippery Rock University field hockey team (6-12, 2-8) Saturday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Kelsey Gustafson connected on a pass from Haley Martin in the 10th minute to give Slippery Rock an early 1-0 advantage.

The fifth-ranked Golden Rams outshot The Rock 7-1 in the opening frame, but went to the break trailing 1-0 after multiple blocks by Rock defenders prevented scoring opportunities for West Chester.

The Golden Rams' sustained pressure finally got to The Rock midway through the second half. Marnie Kusakavitch snuck a shot past Carlee DuMars to tie the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute.

West Chester capitalized on a turnover by Slippery Rock 40 seconds later to take a 2-1 advantage, this time scored by Lauren McGinley in the 50th minute.

Alayna Brown pushed the lead to 3-1 less than 20 seconds later, capitalizing on another Rock turnover in the 50th minute.

The Golden Rams scored three goals in 1:03 to force a timeout by Slippery Rock.

The Rock regained its focus and crept to within a goal at 3-2 after Michelle Couch redirected a pass from Lindsay Brown into the back of the cage in the 59th minute.

Slippery Rock made a late push to get the tying goal, but could not complete the comeback and fell to West Chester, 3-2.

The Golden Rams held advantages of 22-2 in total shots, 10-2 in shots on goal and 12-2 in penalty corners.

DuMars made seven saves, but allowed three goals to finish the season at 4-8.

The careers of Meghan McKinney, Rebecca Williams and Brown were honored as a part of Senior Day in their last matches in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The season finale loss drops Slippery Rock to 6-12 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC. The Rock will miss the PSAC playoffs for the first time in three years.
