SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team (4-7) defeated Lindenwood (2-6) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Kelsey Gustafson capitalized on a penalty shot to give Slippery Rock the game's first goal in the 28th minute.
Kristi O'Connor answered for Lindenwood less than a minute later, finding the back of the cage on a diving shot in the 29th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Lindsay Brown connected on a cross from
Meghan McKinney to put The Rock ahead 2-1 in the 42nd minute.
Brown scored the eventual game-winner in the 52nd minute to push the lead to 3-1. The goal was her 11th on the year, already a single-season high and more than she scored in each of her first two seasons combined.
Carly Brengosz added a late goal for Lindenwood to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Lions could not complete the comeback.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 4-7 on the season, while Lindenwood drops to 2-5.
Carlee DuMars (2-3) started in goal for Slippery Rock, recording the win after making five saves and allowing just two goals.
Victoria Gil (2-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing three goals and making seven saves.
The Rock edged Lindenwood 15-14 in total shots and 12-10 in shots on goal. The teams each held nine penalty corners.
Slippery Rock returns to PSAC action Wednesday, Oct. 9 at home against Mansfield. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
