SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team (6-9, 2-5) dropped a double overtime thriller to Indiana (Pa.) (5-9, 3-4) 2-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Friday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Neither team was able to register a shot until Jessica Kida gave IUP a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, connecting on a one-time feed from Kate Bruce.

Slippery Rock would respond almost immediately. Allison Shade slid a pass to Megan McKay, who fired short-sided into the back of the cage in the 17th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Like Indiana's goal, McKay's goal came on the first shot of the game for Slippery Rock.

IUP controlled the rest of the half, posting advantages of 5-1 in total shots and 6-2 in penalty corners. However, stingy play by Carlee DuMars and The Rock's defensive squad preserved the 1-1 score through half time, highlighted by a huge defensive save by Kelsey Gustafson just seconds before the first buzzer.

The Crimson Hawks continued to put pressure on Slippery Rock in the second half, holding the edge 7-2 in shots and 6-1 in penalty corners. Baylee Childress made a key defensive save in the 50th minute, shutting down a dangerous shot on a penalty corner for IUP.

The game remained knotted up through the rest of the second half and into overtime, where both teams exchanged chances but could not break through the opposition's defense.

Lindsay Brown blasted a shot that looked like the game-winner for Slippery Rock in the 85th minute, but a stellar save by Darian Shuker kept the game alive.

With the clock dwindling and a stroke-off seeming likely, Kate Bruce found a crack in The Rock's defense and managed to get a shot off that snuck past DuMars for a golden-goal in the 97th minute of the second overtime.

DuMars had an impressive game but received the loss after allowing two goals and making 11 saves.

Shuker picked up the win, making three saves and allowing just one goal.

IUP controlled much of the game, posting advantages of 23-6 in shots, 13-4 in shots on goal and 14-5 in penalty corners.

Slippery Rock returns to PSAC action Wednesday, Oct. 23 at home against No. 1 Shippensburg. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
