LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women's basketball team used a plus-22 rebounding advantage to score 21 second chance points en route to handing Slippery Rock a 74-62 loss Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Thomas Fieldhouse.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Slippery Rock, which falls to 4-10 overall and 3-7 in PSAC games. The win is the second in a row for Lock Haven, which improved to 6-8 overall and 3-7 in league action.
Rebounding was the story of the game Wednesday night as The Rock shot the ball well and turned it over just 13 times. The Lady Eagles posted a 46-24 advantage in total rebounds and turned 19 offensive rebounds into 21 points.
Slippery Rock placed four players in double figures, led by 15 points from
D'Asia Chambers.
Erica Aiello added 13 points off the bench, while
Simone Aladenoye chipped in 12 points and
Alexas Brown added 10 points.
The Rock shot 43.6 percent from the field (24-55), 28.6 percent from beyond the 3-point line (2-7) and 60 percent at the free throw line (12-20).
Lock Haven also placed four players in double figures, including two that finished with double-double performances. J.J. Hilliard led all scorers with 17 points and Kacie Hershey added 13 points. Marrysa Moyer netted 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and Kelsey Ryan also scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Lady Eagles shot 44.3 percent from the floor (27-61), just 7.1 percent from long range (1-14) and 82.6 percent at the free throw line (19-23).
Lock Haven led wire-to-wire in the game as Slippery Rock was never able to gain the advantage. The deficit was just one point on eight occasions in the opening period, with the last coming with the score 27-26 with 5:29 to play in the half.
From there, the Lady Eagles went on a 6-0 run to open up a seven point advantage, a margin they would carry to the break leading 35-28.
The Rock cut the deficit to three points early in the second half before Lock Haven pushed it out to an 11 point edge, 45-34, with 15:02 to play. Slippery Rock answered with a 12-6 run to cut it to five points, 51-46, with 10:16 to play but Lock Haven quickly pushed it back out to 11 points at 61-50 with 7:25 to play.
Slippery Rock could get no closer than seven points over the final seven minutes of the game and Lock Haven hit its free throws down the stretch to finish with a game-high 12 point edge.
Wednesday's game marked the second of the season against a divisional opponent for both teams, which will finish the year with only PSAC West games on the schedule. After Wednesday's games, Slippery Rock and Lock Haven are locked in a tie for seventh in the standings.
The Rock will open the home portion of the divisional schedule Saturday when Mercyhurst visits for a 1 p.m. game in Morrow Field House. Saturday is also alumni day, with women's basketball alumni visiting for a tour of the new Smith Student Center before the game and enjoying a postgame reception.
