SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep with a 66-60 win over Kutztown University Saturday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action from Morrow Field House.
Saturday's game marked the final crossover game of the season for both teams, which will begin play in their respective divisions Jan. 16. The Rock, which picked up a win over East Stroudsburg Friday night, improves to 4-9 overall and 3-6 in league games with the win. Kutztown, which had previously upset Indiana (Pa.) and Edinboro, drops to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in PSAC action.
Slippery Rock took the lead midway through the opening period and never relinquished the advantage. The Rock led 28-24 at the break and led wire-to-wire in the second half as the Golden Bears struggled to gain any momentum.
Slippery Rock placed three players in double figures, led by a game-high 23 point performance from
Erinne Cunningham, who knocked down four 3-pointers and also pulled down seven rebounds.
D'Asia Chambers recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds and
Emilee Vitez added 10 points after going a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
Megan Hardiman added nine points and seven rebounds in her best performance in a Rock uniform and
Alexas Brown handed out a game-high six assists.
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the field (22-of-54), 25 percent from beyond the 3-point line (5-of-20) and 53.1 percent at the free throw line (17-of-32). The Rock turned the ball over just 15 times in the game and both teams finished with an even 43 rebounds.
Kutztown was led by a dominant performance on the glass from Alyssa Bonenberger, who finished with a double-double of 18 points and 20 rebounds. Ashley Wood added 20 points and Natalya Lee chipped in eight points.
The Golden Bears shot 32.8 percent from the floor (20-of-61), 23.1 percent from long range (3-of-13) and 58.6 percent from the free throw line (17-of-29).
Kutztown opened the game with the first six points and maintained the lead until the 13:55 mark but a 9-0 Slippery Rock run gave the hosts a 13-9 lead with 13:08 to play in the first half. The Rock pushed the lead up to as much as six points before Kutztown rallied back to tie it at 22-22 with 4:56 to play.
Slippery Rock closed the half on a 6-2 run to lead 28-24 at the break and opened the second half with a 9-1 run to cap a 15-3 run and open up a 37-25 lead with 15:15 to play.
The lead grew to a game-high 16 points at 46-30 with 11:19 to play before Kutztown slowly battled back to cut the deficit to seven points, 61-54, with just under two minutes to play. Slippery Rock hit crucial free throws down the stretch and Kutztown could get no closer than five points in the final 20 seconds.
Slippery Rock will open divisional play in the PSAC West Wednesday at Lock Haven at 6 p.m. and will return to Morrow Field House next Saturday to host Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
