Rock wins big at American International

Slippery Rock capped its weekend off with a dominant 6-1win over at American Internation.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team completed its season opening road trip with a 6-1 win over American International at Abdow Field Saturday afternoon. The Rock improves to 2-0 to for the first time since 1997.

SRU dominated the first half outshooting AIC 20-0 and had a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners. Kaitlin McGinnis started the scoring off when she put back her own rebound just 3:46 into the game for a 1-0 lead. McGinnis would score her second goal of the game just 10 minutes later in the 13th minute to advance the lead to 2-0.

Courtney Bradshaw added to The Rock's scoring in the 20th minute as she put home a goal assisted by Lindsay Brown. The fourth and final goal of the first half came in the 26th minute as Gina Smarelli assisted on a Lauren Geiser goal.

AIC finally got on the board in the second half scoring a goal on its first shot of the game in the 38th minute. Slippery Rock proved to be too much as it answered right back with another goal of its own two minutes later in the 40th minute by Kelsey Gustafson. Ally Banks assisted on the goal and it extended the lead to four goals once again at 5-1.

McGinnis would cap off a hat trick in the 44th minute as she scored on an assist from Kaili Simmons. That would prove to be the final goal of the game.
Starting goalie Courtney Lee played 60 minutes for SRU and allowed one goal and made one save, earning her second win of the season. Carlee DuMars finished the game off in goal for SRU.

The Rock outshot the Yellow Jackets 25-9 on the game and had an 11-9 overall advantage in penalty corners.

Slippery Rock will look to go 3-0 when they play host to Mercy College in the home opener Friday, Sept. 7 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
