BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking, 1-0 overtime loss after a penalty stroke to No. 2 Bloomsburg Friday afternoon at Sports Stadium.
Friday's loss marks the second straight one goal defeat for Slippery Rock against the top two teams in the nation. The Rock dropped a 2-1 game at No. 1 Shippensburg earlier this week.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout regulation with chances for both teams. Both goalies came up with save after save and at the end of regulation the score was knotted 0-0. The Huskies posted a 13-6 shots advantage as well as an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
During the short overtime period, Slippery Rock saw three chances early but couldn't find the back of the cage before Amber Aulenbach put home a penalty stroke just 5:45 into overtime.
Bloomsburg keeper Megan Eppley made a save on a
Kaitlin McGinnis shot just three minutes earlier to help Bloomsburg preserve the win.
Slippery Rock loses its second straight game to a ranked opponent and falls to 3-2 overall and remains 0-1 in the PSAC-West while Bloomsburg improves to 5-1 overall and remains 0-1 in the PSAC-East.
Courtney Lee suffered the loss for The Rock after recording six saves while Eppley made four saves to record the win.
The first half saw action in both ends with both teams creating chances.
Baylee Childress made a defensive save for Slippery Rock in the 11th minute to keep the game scoreless. SRU almost went up 1-0 on an
Ally Banks shot but Eppley made the save for Bloomsburg with the score 0-0 going into the half.
Slippery Rock saw a flurry of shots from Bloomsburg in the 41st minute but Lee was up to the task, making four saves in a minute and a half stretch to keep the score 0-0. Following the Bloomsburg attack, the game was again played on both ends as the teams traded opportunities down the stretch.
Slippery Rock came out firing early in overtime as they had three shots in the first two minutes.
Courtney Bradshaw and Banks missed just wide and Eppley made a save on a McGinnis shot in the 72nd minute.
Two minutes later, Bloomsburg capitalized on a Slippery Rock foul and it was awarded a penalty stroke that ended the match.
Banks finished with four shots while Bradshaw,
Allison Shade, McGinnis,
Kelsey Gustafson and
Rebecca Williams each had one.
It was a close match throughout but the total numbers favored Bloomsburg, 15-9 in shots and 11-8 in penalty corners.
Slippery Rock will be back in action to finish off its back-to-back road games this weekend at No. 6 Millersville. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Saturday on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Live stats will be available for the game.
