Rock opens season with win at Assumption

The SRU field hockey team began its 2012 season with a 3-1 road win against Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team began the 2012 season with a road win Saturday afternoon as it defeated Assumption 3-1 at Multi-Sports Staduim.

Freshman Courtney Bradshaw led way for The Rock with one goal and one assist while juniors Kaitlin McGinnis and Rebecca Williams also tallied one goal for SRU.

Slippery Rock jumped out to an early lead as Bradshaw scored the first goal just 2:23 in. Assists came from senior Gabrielle Malishchak and sophomore Kelsey Gustafson. The Rock continued to outplay the Greyhounds in the first half and McGinnis netted the game's second goal off an assist from Bradshaw in the 18th minute.

The game's biggest lead came later in the first half when Williams scored unassisted to make it 3-0 in the 21st minute. Slippery Rock's defense was dominant in the first half, allowing just two shots. The Rock  managed advantages of 8-2 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners in the opening half.

Assumption turned it on in the second half and outshot SRU 14-11 but couldn't find the back of the net until the final minute, when Paige Anderson scored with just 57 seconds to play.

Starting sophomore goalie Courtney Lee made seven of her eight saves in the second half for Slippery Rock and ended her 2012 season debut without allowing a goal. She was relieved in the 63rd minute by freshman Carlee DuMars, who played the final 7:15 and allowed the only goal.

Assumption goalie Lauren Neilan was credited with the loss after allowing three goals and recording nine saves.

Slippery Rock (1-0) posted overall advantages of 19-16 in total shots, 12-9 in shots on goal and 12-7 in corners.

The Rock will look to go 2-0 for the first time since 1997 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. tomorrow to face American International at 1 p.m.
