Men's Pole Vault Results
PUEBLO, Colo. -- Slippery Rock University pole vaulter
Cameron Daugherty won the NCAA Division II National Championship Saturday with a clearance of 5.15 meters at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Colorado State University Pueblo.
Daugherty, who earned his third career All-America honor, improved on his season and career outdoor best of 5.05 meters. He was the lone athlete to clear 5.15m Saturday, claiming the outright national title.
"Everything clicked today for Cam," said assistant coach
Bill Jordan. "With the event getting bumped up more than six hours, he stayed focused and had the best performance of his career today."
The event was originally scheduled for a 6:50 p.m. start time, but was bumped up to 12:30 p.m. due to concerns over high winds forecasted for later in the day.
Daugherty is the second Slippery Rock athlete to win a national title in the last two years, joining Whitney Hendershot, who won the women's high jump title at the 2011 outdoor meet. He is the first Slippery Rock male athlete to win a title outdoors since 1997 when Steve Rihel won the javelin and is the second pole vaulter in program history to win a title, joining Todd Wunderlich, who won the event at the 1977 championships.
Daugherty is the second of three SRU competitors this weekend at the NCAA meet. Julia Cain placed 10th in the pole vault Friday and Lexi Arnold will throw the javelin at 3:50 p.m. Saturday,
