LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped its seventh straight game Wednesday night, falling 76-67 on the road at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Thomas Fieldhouse.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 5-16 overall and 2-15 in PSAC play. Lock Haven improves to 8-12 overall and 7-10 in the conference standings.
The Lady Eagles led wire to wire Wednesday night, scoring the first seven points of the game and pushing the advantage out to double-digits for most of the second half.
Jasmine Cooper led The Rock with a career-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds.
D'Asia Chambers added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench and
Danielle Smith chipped in 13 points and six boards.
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 37.3 percent from the field, connecting on 25-of-67 attempts from the floor. The Rock struggled from long range, connecting on just two deep shots in the first half and one in the second to finish 3-of-28 (10.7 percent) from behind the 3-point arc. SRU was 14-of-19 at the free throw line (73.7 percent) and posted a 44-32 advantage in total rebounds.
Lock Haven was led by Sharay Hall with 23 points, while Peaches Nesmith added 17 points and Samantha Lane chipped in 11 points.
The Lady Eagles shot 49.1 percent from the field, knocking down 26-of-53 attempts, including 5-of-9 from long range (55.6 percent), and were 19-of-27 at the free throw line (70.4 percent).
LHU came out of the gates firing, scoring the first seven points of the game to lead 7-0 at the 17:26 mark. The Rock answered with a 6-0 run to make it 7-6 with just under 15 minutes to play in the opening period, but the visitors would never get closer than that one point deficit.
Lock Haven knocked down the next basket before building an eventual 11-point advantage to lead 35-24 with 1:04 to play before the break. A layup from Smith sent it to halftime with the hosts leading 35-26.
The Lady Eagles opened the second half with an 11-2 run to open up a 46-28 lead with 15:27 to play, an advantage that SRU would never recover from.
LHU pushed the lead out to as much as 19 points on three occasions, the last coming at 67-48 with 7:03 to play. Slippery Rock closed the game with a 19-9 run, capped by a layup from Chambers with 11 seconds left, to account for the final 76-67 score.
Slippery Rock will have the tough task of traveling to undefeated and second-ranked Edinboro this Saturday to attempt to snap its current losing skid. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
