SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped its 11th straight game Wednesday night, falling 75-59 to No. 18 Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.
The Rock matched the Golden Knights in scoring in the second half, but could not overcome a 16-point halftime deficit. The loss drops Slippery Rock's record to 5-20 overall and 2-19 in PSAC play. Gannon improves to 21-4 overall and 18-3 in the conference.
Jasmine Cooper had 20 points and six rebounds to lead The Rock.
Paris Thomas chipped in 14 points, while
Danielle Smith added nine points and eight rebounds.
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 39.3 percent from the field, connecting on 22-of-56 attempts. The Rock shot 30.4 percent from long range (7-of-23) and were 8-of-12 from the free throw line (66.7 percent).
Gannon was led by Caitlyn Lowe with 16 points, while both Doriyon Glass and Nettie Blake each added 15 points.
The Golden Knights shot 44.8 percent from the field, hitting 26-of-58 attempts. They made 7-of-17 from long range (41.2 percent) and were 80 percent at the free throw line (16-of-20).
Slippery Rock and Gannon traded baskets from the opening tip and the score remained tied at 5-5 with 17:50 to play in the opening period. Gannon then went on a 12-0 run and never looked back, pushing the lead out to 16 points, 43-27 going into halftime.
Saturday's game marked the fourth consecutive game that Slippery Rock was forced to try to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit.
Gannon pushed the lead out to 21 points on two occasions, with 16:38 and 11:26 to play in the second half. The Rock responded with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 13 points, 69-56, with 4:13 to play, but the Golden Knights held SRU to just three points over the final four minutes to seal the win.
Slippery Rock will close the 2011-12 season Saturday when Clarion University visits Morrow Field House for a 1 p.m. tip. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day, with seniors
