Rock falls to Lourdes, 68-60

Slippery Rock closed the calendar year with a 68-60 loss to Lourdes University Sunday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team closed the 2012 calendar year with a 68-60 loss to visiting Lourdes University in non-conference action Sunday at Morrow Field House.

Sunday's game marked the final non-conference game of the season for Slippery Rock, which will close the year with 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games. The Rock owns a 2-7 overall record and a 1-4 mark in PSAC games. Lourdes, which competes in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and is an NAIA member, snapped an eight-game losing streak and improved to 4-11 overall with the win.

Slippery Rock placed three players in double figures, led by a game-high 18-point effort from Alexas Brown, who also finished with a game-high six assists. D'Asia Chambers added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Simone Aladenoye chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Rock finished the game shooting 37 percent from the field, connecting on 20-of-54 attempts, including 6-of-18 from beyond the 3-point line (33.3 percent), and finished 60.9 percent at the free throw line (14-of-23).

Lourdes was paced by a balanced scoring attack that saw five players finish in double figures, led by a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds from Tiffany Scott. Lauren Tilden finished with a team-high 14 points, while Tarynn Hampton and Ty Ali each added 13 points and Emily Orsini chipped in 11 points.

The Gray Wolves shot 34.8 percent from the field (23-of-66), 33.3 percent from long range (9-of-27), 65 percent from the free throw line (13-of-20) and posted a 47-40 rebounding advantage.

Slippery Rock opened up an 11-point lead, 26-15, with 7:52 to play in the opening half before Lourdes took control of the game. The visitors closed the half on a 20-8 run capped by a layup from Tiffani Blackman with 22 seconds left to take a 35-34 lead into halftime.

The teams exchanged points to open the second half and battled back and forth until it was tied 51-51 with 8:21 to play. From there, Lourdes put together a 9-2 run to take a 60-53 lead with just under four minutes to play, a lead Slippery Rock could never recover from.

The Rock cut it to four points, 64-60, with 13 seconds to play, but Lourdes knocked down its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Slippery Rock is back in action Jan. 4 in a PSAC crossover game at Millersville set for 5:30 p.m. The Rock returns home Jan. 11 and Jan. 12 for a pair of crossovers with East Stroudsburg and Kutztown.
