MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped a 78-65 decision at Mansfield University Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action from Decker Gymnasium.
The loss is the fourth in row for The Rock, which drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in PSAC play. Mansfield, which plays in the PSAC Eastern Division, improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. While the two teams are on different sides of the league, Sunday's game will count toward the league standings with the full mandated crossover schedule.
Mansfield jumped out to a 14-2 lead over the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. Slippery Rock recovered from the early deficit, but was forced to play catch-up the entire game and would never get closer than seven points.
Jazmyne Frost led Slippery Rock with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and was the lone player in double figures.
Alexas Brown added nine points and five assists, while
Simone Aladenoye chipped in eight points and
Danielle Garroutte added seven points.
The Rock made 24-of-73 attempts from the field for a 32.9 percent efficiency, including 4-of-35 from beyond the 3-point arc (11.4 percent), and connected on 13-of-23 attempts from the free throw line (56.5 percent).
Mansfield had three players in double figures, led by a game-high 24-point effort from Katie Fitzpatrick. Kayla Espigh added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Jena Matter chipped in 14 points.
The Mountaineers shot the ball well from the opening tip and finished above 50 percent, hitting 31-of-61 shots from the field (50.8 percent), including 5-of-13 from long range (38.5 percent) and were 11-of-21 from the free throw line (53.4 percent).
After the opening run from Mansfield, Slippery Rock slowly chipped away at the deficit and cut it to 20-12 with 10:59 to play in the first half. The Mountaineers answered with a 8-2 run in a stretch of just one minute to make it 28-14 and then pushed the lead out to 40-22 with just under four minutes to play.
Slippery Rock closed the half on a 10-1 run to make it 41-32 heading into the break.
The Rock struggled to gain momentum in the second half, cutting the deficit to eight points on five occasions and cutting it to the smallest deficit of the game at seven points, 66-59, with 4:52 to play, but could never get it closer. Mansfield closed the game with a 12-6 run to seal the victory.
Slippery Rock will open PSAC Western Division play when it travels to Clarion University Dec. 8 for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
