Charleston rallies by Rock, 93-76

Slippery Rock dropped a 93-76 non-conference game Saturday night at the University of Charleston.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped a 93-76 decision on the road at the University of Charleston Saturday night in non-conference action.

The game was the season opener for the Golden Eagles, while Slippery Rock dropped to 1-2 overall on the year with the loss.

Slippery Rock led 54-48 with 13 minutes to play before Charleston put together a 11-0 run in a stretch of just  more than two minutes to take a 59-54 lead with 10:50 to play, a lead the hosts would never relinquish. Slippery Rock cut the deficit to within one before the Golden Eagles pushed the lead back out to 12 at 82-70 with 3:35 to play, a gap that proved too large for The Rock.

Slippery Rock made 29-of-68 attempts from the field for a 42.6 percent efficiency, including 8-of-28 from beyond the 3-point line (28.6 percent). The Rock was 10-of-19 from the free throw line (52.6 percent) and grabbed 40 rebounds.

Slippery Rock placed four players in double figures for the third time this season, led by a game-high 20-point, nine rebound effort from D'Asia Chambers. Alexas Brown added 16 points , eight assists and six steals, while Danielle Garroutte added 12 points off the bench and Erinne Cunningham added 10 points.

Charleston was led by a game-high 20-point performance from LeAnne Ross and a 19-point showing from Nichole Perry. Jessi Cowden added 15 points and Kayla Dozer chipped in 10 points.

The Golden Eagles connected on 31-of-73 attempts from the field (42.5 percent), including 13-of-31 from long range (41.9 percent). The hosts were 18-of-23 at the free throw line (78.3 percent) and pulled down 52 rebounds.

Saturday's game was the third of just four non-conference games this season for SRU, which will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 with crossover games at Bloomsburg and Mansfield. Tip is set for 1 p.m. in both games.

The Rock returns home Dec. 18 and Dec. 19 for conference games with West Chester and Cheyney, with tip set for 5:30 p.m. at Morrow Field House in both games.
