WHEELING, W. Va. – A 9-0 run late in the second half and 45 points from its bench led hosting Wheeling Jesuit University to a 59-56 win over Slippery Rock University in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
Slippery Rock led by three, 49-46, with 6:59 to play before the Cardinals put together a 9-0 run to take a 55-49 lead with 4:07 to play. The Rock answered with their own 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one, and had a last second look at a long range 3-pointer to tie, but could never close the gap.
Tuesday's game was the first of the year for Wheeling Jesuit, while Slippery Rock moves to 1-1 on the season after its 89-87 last second win in the opener over Urbana.
Slippery Rock placed four players in double figures, led by a 14-point effort from
D'Asia Chambers and a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds from
Jazmyne Frost.
Alexas Brown added 14 points and
Danielle Garroutte chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Only one of Wheeling Jesuit's starting five scored more than three points, with a seven-point showing from Emily Robinson. The team got nearly all of its scoring from the bench, headlined by a game-high 18 points from Kelsey Pacholke, who also nabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Lucy DeFruscio added 11 points off the bench for the Cardinals.
Slippery Rock connected on 22-of-67 attempts from the field to finish with a 32.8 percent efficiency. The Rock was 5-of-17 from beyond the 3-point line (29.4%) and was 7-of-14 (50%) from the free throw line.
Wheeling Jesuit posted a 48-44 edge in total rebounds and finished the game shooting 38.5 percent, knocking down 25-of-65 attempts from the floor. The Cardinals were cold from long range, hitting just 4-of-19 attempts for a 21.1 percent mark and were worse from the free throw line at 5-of-11 (42.5%).
Slippery Rock opened the game on fire, scoring the first eight points to lead 8-0 just over five minutes into the first half. Wheeling Jesuit weathered the storm and clawed back into the game with a 16-7 run to take its first lead of the game, 16-15, with 6:51 to play in the period.
The teams traded scores all the way to the intermission, with Chambers knocking down a 3-pointer with five seconds left to send it to halftime tied at 28-28.
The second half saw more of the same, with both teams trading short runs to gain advantages throughout. Slippery Rock led by five at 42-37 with 12:35 to play, but a 5-0 run in less than two minutes from the Cardinals erased that margin.
The fifth tie of the game came at 46-46 with 8:32 to play and Slippery Rock added the next three points with a jumper from Brown and free throw from Frost to lead 49-46 with 6:59 to play, setting up the finish.
After the 9-0 run from the hosts, Slippery Rock clawed back into the game and trailed by two at 58-56 after a jumper from Brown with 19 seconds left. Wheeling Jesuit turned the ball over with seven seconds left sent Frost to the line with five seconds left, but both attempts missed the mark.
Wheeling Jesuit had a chance to put the game away with three second left when Robinson went to the free throw line, but she missed the second of two and Frost grabbed the rebound. She found Chambers for a last second long range 3-pointer that fell short.
Slippery Rock will remain on the road when it travels to the University of Charleston Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
