SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team dropped its fourth straight game, 2-0 to second-ranked Shippensburg Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division game at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
Shippensburg's Taylor Jones scored a goal in the 16th minute of the game and that would prove to be all the Raiders needed to take home the victory. Katie Shoop added an insurance goal late in regulation to secure the win for Shippensburg.
With the loss, Slippery Rock falls to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC-West while the Raiders improve to 13-1 overall and own a 5-1 record in the PSAC-West.
Both teams had chances to score early but key saves kept the game scoreless. Slippery Rock goalie
Courtney Lee made a save on Shoop early while Kayla Harshman made a defensive save on SRU's
Lindsay Brown in the fourth minute.
The Raiders outshot The Rock 8-5 in the first half and finally got one past Lee as Jones scored unassisted just after a penalty corner. The rest of the half was mostly back and forth but Slippery Rock did get a chance late. Ship's Ciarra Delost made a save on an
Ally Banks shot and
Courtney Bradshaw's rebound attempt went just wide for The Rock.
The second half was dominated by Shippensburg as Slippery Rock only had one shot attempt the rest of the way. Shoop put the game away for good when she scored her second goal of the year with just over 10 minutes to play.
Shippensburg outshot Slippery Rock 15-6, including 7-1 in the second half and held the advantage in penalty corners 11-3.
Lee moves to 6-7 on the year while Shippensburg's Delost improves to 8-1.
The Rock is back in action Tuesday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Mercyhurst for a PSAC-West matchup.
