SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Slippery Rock University field hockey team snapped a five game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Seton Hill Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win improves The Rock to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC-West, while Seton Hill drops to 6-9 overall and 2-6 in league play.
The seven wins is the most for any Slippery Rock team since the 1998 team finished with eight wins. The Rock is firmly in the third and final playoff position in the PSAC-West with two league games remaining on the schedule, at home against Mansfield and on the road at Indiana.
Slippery Rock got points from six different players in the win Friday night, with goals coming from
Allison Shade,
Kelsey Gustafson and
Lindsay Brown and assists going to
Gabrielle Malishchak,
Rebecca Williams and Gina Smarelli.
Courtney Lee made three saves in goal and Malishchak added a defensive save in the winning effort for SRU.
Seton Hill scored late in the game when Michelle Hogan found the back of the cage off an assist from Janelle Hofer. Autumn Reid played the first 45:35 in goal and took the loss, recording two saves. Rebecca Portillo closed the game out and did not have to make a save.
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 8-5 in total shots and 11-6 in penalty corners. Both teams were credited with five shots on goal.
Shade opened the game's scoring with her team-leading seventh goal of the year in the ninth minute after she directed a shot from Malishchak into the cage off a corner.
The hosts went up 2-0 in the 19th minute when Gustafson scored her third of the season after taking a cross from
Rebecca Williams. The 2-0 margin stood until halftime and Slippery Rock went into the break with a 5-3 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corners.
The Rock added a third goal in the 44th minute when Brown netted her third of the year after taking a pass from Smarelli and scoring inside the near post.
Seton Hill's lone tally of the game came in the 65th minute and was too late to get the visitors back into the match.
Slippery Rock will play its final home game of the season when it welcomes Mansfield University to Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Oct. 17 for a 4 p.m. game. The Rock will close the regular season on the road at Indiana (Pa.) Oct. 21.
