KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team suffered two losses Friday at the Joshua W. Wesner Tournament in Kutztown, Pa. as The Rock fell 4-1 against No. 7 Kutztown to begin the day and 4-2 to Bellarmine in the nightcap.

Slippery Rock (0-3) was unable to overcome Kutztown's three first-half goals in its 4-1 loss to KU. Jamie Koenig, Emily Labowitz and Julie Rosenkaimer all scored in the opening 35 minutes of play for the Golden Bears (1-0) to give Kutztown a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Kutztown added an insurance goal from Imani Ferguson in the second half to extend its lead to 4-0 before Slippery Rock freshman Amanda Morton scored the first goal of the season for SRU at 57:54 to make the score 4-1.

Freshman Kaili Simmons tallied a team-high two shots for Slippery Rock while freshman goalie Courtney Lee made her collegiate debut, stopping 9 shots in the first half. Freshman goalie Alexandra Kirsch came on in relief of Lee in the second half and made five saves while allowing one goal. For the game Kutztown held advantages in shots (19-7) and penalty corners (8-2).

Just four hours after the start of its game against Kutztown, SRU was back on the field for its game vs. Bellarmine (2-1). The Knights struck first when Rachael Walz scored at 15:15 to give Bellarmine a 1-0 lead. However, Slippery Rock answered back 12 minutes later when sophomore Rebecca Williams scored off of a pass from Simmons to tie the game at 1-1. The two teams headed into halftime tied.

Bellarmine opened the second half with Rachael McAllister (48:46) and Alex Ojeda (49:35) scoring back-to-back goals in under a minute to give Bellarmine a commanding 3-1 advantage. The Rock once again answered back when freshman Allison Shade found classmate Kelsey Gustafson, who was able beat the BU goalie off of a penalty corner to make it a 3-2 game with nine minutes to play. However, Ojeda put any thoughts of a Rock comeback to rest by scoring her second goal of the game at 64:49 to put the Knights up by the final score of 4-2.

Gustafson finished the game with a team-best two shots on goal. Freshman goalie Alexandra Kirsch made her second career-start, allowing all four goals and making seven saves. Bellarmine outshot SRU 15-7 and also held a 15-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Slippery Rock will look to earn its first victory of the season when it plays Mercy College Saturday at 10 a.m. in its third game at the Joshua W. Wesner Tournament. Last season, Erin Moran scored two goals as SRU cruised to a 5-0 win over Mercy.
