Rock upends Mansfield, 5-0

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team scored a season-high five goals Tuesday afternoon en route to a 5-0 victory over Mansfield at Thompson-Mihalik Stadium.

The win, which was The Rock's second in as many games, improved SRU's record to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division.

Slippery Rock received goals from junior Gabrielle Malishchak, sophomore Allison Banks, senior Rebecca Williams, freshman Gina Smarelli and freshman Kelsey Gustafson. Skylar Brosse, Banks and Malishchak all recorded assists as well.

Freshman goalie Courtney Lee improved to 3-1 on the season and recorded the first shutout of her career by stopping the one shot on goal she faced during the game.

The Slippery Rock offense fired off a season-best 28 shots with five different Rock players tallying at least four shots. Smarelli led the pack with five shots. Freshman Allison Shade also posted two shots.

As a team, SRU outshot Mansfield 28-4 while also holding a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Slippery Rock, which did not score a goal in the first half of its win over Seton Hill, scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. Malishchak scored an unassisted goal at 3:50 to put SRU up 1-0. Just four minutes later Brosse found Banks who beat Mansfield goalie Kristie Rollman for her first score of the season.

The Green and White maintained its 2-0 lead for the rest of the first half before Williams scored her team-high third goal of the season at 34:33 to give SRU a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

The Green and White again controlled possession for much of the second half and produced an astounding 20 shots. Two of the 20 shots found their way inside the Mansfield cage, as Smarelli scored her first-career goal at 61:52 with Gustafson adding the game's final score at the end of regulation to give SRU its 5-0 win.

Slippery Rock will look to extend its winning streak to three games 12 p.m. Friday at C.W. Post.
