SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior
Skylar Brosse scored two second-half goals to lead the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Seton Hill Friday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. The win snaps a four-game Rock losing streak and improves SRU's record to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division.
The Rock outshot Seton Hill (2-5, 0-3 PSAC-West) 13-8 while also holding a 15-6 edge in penalty corners. The 15 corners were the second-most recorded by SRU this season. The win, which broke Slippery Rock's four-game losing streak against the Griffins, also saw SRU record 11 shots on goal which is the second-highest amount of the season.
Slippery Rock controlled the pace of the game in what turned out to be one of its finest performances of the season.
Sophomore Allison Banks assisted both of Brosse's scores while also recording a team-high three shots on goal. Senior
Rebecca Coleman and freshman
Kaili Simmons both had strong games as well with two shots on goal each. Freshmen Gina Smarelli and
Allison Shade came off the bench for SRU to tally shots also.
Freshman goalie
Courtney Lee made her second start of the season and improved her record to 2-1 after making one save and allowing just one goal, which came with just seconds left in the game.
After a scoreless first half Slippery Rock quickly went to work in the second period and drew a corner that led to Brosse's first goal of the night just 1:11 into the second half to give The Rock a 1-0 lead. The Green and White continued to be the aggressors, firing off five more shots before Brosse scored her second goal of the night at 61:01 to give The Rock a 2-0 lead that would never be relinquished.
Seton Hill scored its only goal of the contest and made it a 2-1 game when Allegra Ramos beat Lee for a score with just eight seconds remaining in regulation.
Slippery Rock will look to keep its newfound momentum going when it hosts Mansfield 4 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson-Mihalik Stadium. SRU defeated Mansfield, 6-1, at home last season.
