SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team began the 2011 season on a down note Friday afternoon as American International College defeated Slippery Rock 3-0 at Thompson Stadium.
Slippery Rock (0-1) held advantages in shots (17-9) and corners (11-4), but was unable to convert any of their chances into goals.

Lindsay Brown added two shots each. In her first collegiate game, freshman goalie
Alexandra Kirsch made three saves and allowed three goals.
American International (1-1), netted its first goal 2:09 into the game when Mackenzie Kewley beat Kirsch with an unassisted score. Slippery Rock proceeded to dominate play for the remainder of the period, but would be unable to slip any of its 12 first-period shots past AIC goalie Kim Steiner and went into halftime trailing 1-0. Steiner finished the game with nine saves.
The Yellow Jackets added two more goals in the second half thanks to scores from Kristen Angeletti (46:57) and Jessica Hall (49:58). SRU was unable to score on any of its five shots in the second half as American International hung on for the 3-0 shutout-victory.
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back with a win 3 p.m. Sept. 9 at Kutztown. Last season Slippery Rock lost to Kutztown 3-2, Malishchak and sophomore
Kaitlin McGinnis both scored goals in the defeat.
