SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team was unable to pull off an upset of sixth-ranked Millersville Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, as The Rock fell 2-0 to the Marauders. The loss drops SRU's overall record to 1-5 on the season.
SRU was led by junior
Gabrielle Malishchak, who recorded three shots. Senior
Rebecca Coleman, sophomore Allison Banks and freshman
Allison Shade all tallied shots as well for The Rock.
Slippery Rock's defense, which was able to clear the majority of Millersville's penalty corners, was paced by senior
Erin Moran, who picked up her second defensive save in as many games. Freshman
Alexandra Kirsch took the loss at goalie for SRU after allowing both goals and making three saves.
For the game, Millersville (3-2) outshot The Rock 9-7 while also holding a 12-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Marauders controlled possession in the first half and compiled four shots and six corners, but the SRU defense was able to hold off the attack for much of the period until Brittany Troutman snuck a shot past Kirsch at the 31:06 mark in the period to give Millersville a 1-0 lead, which it would hold heading halftime.
Slippery Rock's offense picked up in the second half as SRU was able to force four corners and six shots. However, Slippery Rock was unable to convert any of its opportunities into goals. Millersville's Kirsten Dively added another goal for the visitors at 55:56 to put the Marauders up 2-0. The Green and White managed two shots after Millersville's second goal, but both were stopped by MU goalie Sarah Dickinson to finalize the shutout.
Slippery Rock will look to bounce back and end its two-game losing streak at home 2 p.m. Saturday against No. 3 Bloomsburg.
