SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletes for Forgotten Angels group raised $1,100 at last week's Dinner for Dreams. That money will be put towards another community service trip to Haiti, scheduled for next January.
“We want to thank the entire campus community for coming out to support the Dinner for Dreams last week,” said
Noreen Herlihy, who advises the group. “We had a tremendous turnout for the dinner and we couldn't do the things we do with this group without such great support.”
The dinner was one of many fundraising initiatives the group will take part in over the next several months in preparation to take another trip to Haiti to work with children in orphanages. Three years ago the group traveled to Haiti and delivered school supplies and taught sports camps.
Since its first trip to Haiti, the group has traveled to New Orleans to assist in the rebuilding efforts of Hurricane Katrina and most recently to St. Lucia to deliver important educational information to local schools and to teach sports clinics to children.
This spring, the group will focus its efforts on campus with the building of a memorial flower garden outside of Morrow Field House. The garden will honor the memory of many individuals that lost a battle with cancer.
“We're blessed to have a tremendous group of selfless student-athletes involved in this group,” said Herlihy. “It's incredible to see them working so hard to help people from all over the world.”
