SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team tied the all-time school record for wins in a season with a 17-7 victory over Edinboro Thursday night in the final game of the season for each team.
With the win, The Rock closes the year at 11-6 overall and 5-6 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The 11 wins matches the 1983 team that went 11-5-1 for the most wins in program history. The 11-6 finish also marks the first winning season for SRU since the program was reinstated in 2007.
Not lost in the team accomplishment reached Thursday night was
Amy Halls breaking her own school record for goals in a single-season. She finished the night with five tallies to establish a new single-season mark of 61 goals and now owns the top-three single-season marks in SRU history with 61, 57 and 53.
Another highlight of the night came when senior defender
Olivia Lampenfeld moved up to attack in the second half and scored her first collegiate goal in her last collegiate game. Moments later, fellow senior defender
Alison Rusnak tallied her second goal of the season. Meanwhile, back on defense, senior captain and two-time All-PSAC performer
Brianne Dishong gutted out the second half playing with a torn ACL and a torn meniscus to end her career on the field.
The Rock was in control of Thursday night's game from the opening draw and finished with advantages of 24-17 in total shots, 30-25 in ground balls and 13-12 in caused turnovers, all while allowing every available player to log minutes. Both teams pulled down 13 draw controls.
Halls led all scorers in the game with five goals and one assist and also grabbed three ground balls, three draw controls and forced three turnovers.
Katie Roof posted a hat trick with three ground balls and three draw controls and
Alexis Slutsky tallied two goals and one assist for the three-point night.
Lauren Laubach netted two goals and
Emma VanDenburg scored one goal and handed out one assist to also finish with two points.
Casey Quinn rounded out the multi-point scorers with two assists.
Morgan Pettit,
Ariel Knox, Lampenfeld and Rusnak all scored one goal.
Edinboro was led by Kaitlin Magee with three goals, while Shannon Rohrich added a goal and an assist.
Kat Elkins earned the win in goal for SRU, stopping three shots and allowing five goals.
Ariel Gilbert played the final 17:52 of the game and allowed two goals while making one save.
Michelle Zei took the loss in net for Edinboro, playing the first 20:57 and allowing 10 goals and making one save. Teresa Fiori played the final 39:03, allowing seven goals and recording four saves.
The game opened with neither team able to maintain possession or get a solid scoring chance until Slutsky put Slippery Rock on the board at the 26:27 mark.
Halls netted back-to-back goals to put SRU up 3-0 with 24:33 to play in the opening half before Edinboro got on the board at the 23:06 mark to cut it to 3-1.
From there, the teams traded goals and then Slutsky and VanDenburg tallied goals to push it out to 6-2, forcing the Fighting Scots to take a timeout. They scored coming out of the timeout to cut it to 6-3, but Slippery Rock answered with a 3-0 run.
Roof scored off an assist from Quinn at the 17:09 mark and then Halls netted two goals to make it 9-3. Edinboro tried to stop the run with a goal at the 10:47 mark, but The Rock slammed the door with a 5-0 run to end the half leading 14-4.
Edinboro scored the opening goal of the second half, but a 3-0 run from SRU after that put the game out of reach.
