Rock falls to #14 Bloomsburg, 10-6

No. 14 Bloomsburg scored seven goals in the second half to pull away for a 10-6 win over Slippery Rock Saturday in PSAC action.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 14th-ranked Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team scored seven goals in the second half to pull away for a 10-6 win over Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match Saturday at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 9-6 overall and 4-6 in PSAC play and is mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Bloomsburg improves to 9-6 and 6-4 in league play and remains alive for a playoff berth.

The Rock trailed by just one at halftime, 3-2, but the Huskies opened the second half with a 4-1 run to open up a 7-3 lead. From there, each time Slippery Rock scored and gained any momentum, Bloomsburg answered back, never allowing the hosts to get closer than three goals.

Casey Quinn provided most of the offense for Slippery Rock, scoring four goals on the day to move her into third on the all-time career scoring list with 111 goals. She needs just two goals to move into second behind Amy Halls. . Katie Roof added one goal and one assist and Brittany Jaillet scored one goal to cap the scoring.

Bloomsburg was led by Samantha King with five goals and one assist, while Sam Mazzie added two goals.

Sara Bates earned the win in goal for the Huskies, recording six saves and allowing six goals. Kat Elkins took the loss after allowing 10 goals and registering five saves.

Bloomsburg finished the game with a slim 21-18 advantage in total shots, including an 11-10 edge in the second half. The Huskies also posted a 24-21 edge in ground balls and cleared the zone successfully on 14-of-20 attempts, while Slippery Rock finished with a 10-8 advantage in draw controls and was 11-for-16 on clearing attempts. Both teams were credited with 12 caused turnovers.

The game opened with a scoreless stretch of three minutes before Bloomsburg netted the first goal at the 26:57 mark. The Huskies scored again at 24:12 to take a 2-0 lead before Slippery Rock cut the deficit in half with a goal from Quinn at 14:26.

Bloomsburg answered that with a goal with 13 minutes remaining in the half and Jaillet scored off an assist from Roof at 8:33 to account for the final tally of the half.

The Huskies opened the second half with two goals in the first six minutes to open up a 5-2 lead, but Quinn cut the deficit to 5-3 at the 19:51 mark. From there, the visitors tallied two goals in the next five minutes to push the lead out to 7-3, an advantage SRU could never recover from.

Slippery Rock will close the season with two more home games, April 19 against Tiffin and April 21 against Edinboro. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
