Rock downs Charleston, 66-52

Slippery Rock snapped a six game losing streak with a 66-52 win over Charleston Monday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team snapped a six game losing streak with a 66-52 win over the University of Charleston Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Morrow Field House.

The win was the first since a Nov. 16 victory over Ursuline and improved The Rock's overall record to 2-7 on the year. Charleston dropped to 4-5 overall.

Slippery Rock placed three players in double figures, all with more than 17 points, led by a game-high 19 point effort from Danielle Smith, who also finished with six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Jasmine Cooper recorded a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and Erinne Cunningham also added 17 points and six rebounds. Paris Thomas handed out a game-high nine assists.

Charleston was led by a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds from Erika Rousculp. Shelby Stokes added 13 points off the bench and Chrissy Keir chipped in 10 points.

The Rock finished the game shooting 44.1 percent from the field (26-59), including 40.0 percent from behind the 3-point line (8-20). The hosts were 50.0 percent at the free throw line (6-12).

The Golden Eagles shot 32.3 percent from the field (20-62), but were 0-for-9 from the 3-point arc. Charleston was 80.0 percent at the charity stripe (12-15).

Monday's game marked the last game before the holiday break for Slippery Rock, which will return to action with a road trip to Notre Dame (Ohio), Dec. 28. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.

Cunningham opened the game with a 3-pointer on the first possession and the two teams kept things close, playing to five different ties throughout the half, with the last one coming at 17-17 with 7:51 to play before the break.

From there, Slippery Rock put together a 9-2 run to open up a 26-19 lead with 5:19 to play in the half. The visitors cut the deficit to three points with just under three minutes before the intermission, but The Rock closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 33-25 lead into halftime.

The hosts kept the pressure on to open the second half, pushing the lead out to 45-29 after a 12-4 run with 14:32 to play in the game.

Slippery Rock pushed the lead out to 22 points at 56-34 when Cunningham knocked down a 3-pointer with 7:22 to play that put the game out of reach. The Rock's defensive effort yielded just nine points in the first 13:38 of the second half.

Monday's game also marked the final home game of the calendar year, as Slippery Rock will not play in Morrow Field House again until the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference schedule picks back up with Cheyney visits for a 5:30 p.m. game Jan. 6.
