WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior forward
Danielle Smith recorded game-high totals of 21 points and 13 rebounds Saturday afternoon, but the effort wasn't enough as hosting West Chester University beat Slippery Rock University, 79-68, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's basketball “crossover” action.
Smith was one of four Rock players who finished the game with a double-digit scoring total and one of two who recorded a “double-double” for the Green and White (1-2 overall, 0-1 PSAC).
Sophomore forward
Jasmine Cooper scored 16 points and snared 10 rebounds, senior guard
Sherita Stanley chipped in 12 points and five assists and junior guard
Erinne Cunningham finished with 12 points and three assists.
Saturday's game was the second straight in which Cooper and Smith both recorded double-figure scoring and rebounding totals.
Allison Hostetter scored a team-high 19 points Saturday for West Chester, which recorded its second victory in as many games this season.
The Rock will look to bounce back and even its overall record when it travels to Millersville University for a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
Cunningham buried the first of her four 3-point baskets to give SRU a 3-0 lead Saturday, but that proved to be the only lead the Green and White would hold.
West Chester pulled out to a 10-point, 23-13, lead at the 12:30 mark of the first half, only to see SRU roar back to trim the margin to one point, 23-22, on a Smith jumper with 9:30 left before halftime.
The Rock and Golden Rams were tied at 32-32 and 34-34 before the hosts closed out the first half of action with an 11-2 run and took a 45-36 lead into the intermission.
SRU scored the first five points of the second half to cut the gap to 45-41 but was never able to get any closer.
The guests scored six of the last eight points in the game to set the 11-point final margin.
SRU made 40% (27-68) of its field goal attempts, hit on 31% (9-29) of its 3-point attempts and canned 42% (5-12) of its free throws.
Cunningham was 4-of-15 from 3-point range, Cooper connected on all three of her trey tries and Stanley was 2-of-4 from long range to lead The Rock's 3-point attack.
West Chester shot 45% (32-71) from the field, 33% (2-6) from 3-point range and 59% (13-22) from the foul line.
The hosts held a 48-40 rebounding advantage and also had less turnovers by a 26-19 margin.
