SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University parlayed the double-barrelled, “double-double” efforts of post players
Jasmine Cooper and
Danielle Smith into its first women's basketball win of the season Wednesday night.
Cooper scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, both of which were game-high totals, and Smith added 16 points and 13 rebounds as The Rock evened their season record at 1-1 with a 67-59 victory over visiting Ursuline College of Ohio (0-2).
Complementing the frontline players' performance was a steady effort by point guard
Paris Thomas, who scored nine points, handed out nine assists, grabbed five rebounds and recorded four steals. Shooting guard
Sherita Stanley added seven points and eight rebounds for the Green and White.
Jaylene Taylor led Ursuline with 17 points and eight rebounds and Brooke Trauthwein added eight points and seven rebounds in a substitute role.
Neither The Rock nor Ursuline shot the ball particularly well.
SRU hit on only 34% (25-74) of its field goal attempts, including an icy-cold 4% (1-24) showing from 3-point range, but made 16 of 23 (70%) of its free throws.
Ursuline, meanwhile, made 39% (23-59) of its field goal tries, hit 36% (5-14) of its long-range shots and canned eight of 13 (62%) free throws.
The Rock held a 53-40 rebounding advantage and also had less turnovers by a 19-14 margin. But the hosts managed only a 15-12 edge in points off turnovers.
The teams battled to an 11-11 stalemate in the first eight minutes of action before The Rock scored seven unanswered points amidst an 11-2 run to take a 22-13 lead with seven minutes left before halftime.
Three and a half minutes later, though, Ursuline had outscored the hosts by a 14-4 margin and taken a 27-26 lead.
The Rock responded with a string of 12 unanswered points in the final 3:30 of the opening stanza and took a 38-27 lead into the intermission.
The hosts held a 13-point, 48-35, advantage with 13 minutes left to play in the game, only to see Ursuline come right back with a 12-3 run that trimmed the margin to four points, 51-47, with 6:30 remaining.
That would be as close as the Arrows came to regaining the lead, though, as SRU scored 16 of the next 25 points to take an 11-point advantage with 30 seconds left.
The Rock takes to the road for back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” games Saturday and Sunday at West Chester and Millersville. The opening tip for both games is set for 1 p.m.
The next home games will be Dec. 3-4, when conference interdivisional rivals East Stroudsburg and Kutztown invade Morrow for 1 p.m. tipoffs.
