SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior quarterback
Cody Endres passed for a season-high 305 yards and a career-best three touchdowns Saturday night to help hosting Slippery Rock University withstand a sloppy effort and subdue a game Clarion University squad, 27-13, Saturday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division football action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The win was SRU's fourth in five games this fall and second in as many PSAC-West contests. The Rock and California (Pa.) are tied for the division lead after both Edinboro and Mercyhurst sustained setbacks Saturday afternoon.
The Rock travels to Edinboro for a 1 p.m. division game next Saturday.
Clarion fell to 0-5 overall, 0-2 in division play, with the loss to The Rock. The Golden Eagles host Lock Haven (0-4, 0-2 PSAC-W) next Saturday in a battle of winless teams.
Junior tight end
Josh Gardner caught two of Endres' TD tosses (9 and 2 yards), while senior wide receiver
Devin Goda had a game-high eight catches for a career-best 108 yards, including a 32-yard, second-quarter TD that gave SRU a lead it would not relinquish.
Endres finished the game with 27 completions in 35 attempts and had one pass picked off to lead The Rock to a 453-199 total yardage advantage. His only mistake was returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Clarion cornerback Anthony Stimac early in the second quarter of action.
Clarion's other points came on a 34-yard return by Mike Deitrick of a blocked punt midway through the fourth quarter.
The Rock defense has now held opposing offenses without a touchdown for 10 consecutive quarters, a string that extends back to the second quarter of the Green and White's Week 2 loss at West Chester.
Senior linebacker
Jake Wickline and junior defensive end
Jeff Thompson each recorded 11 tackles to lead The Rock's defensive effort. The Rock broke up eight passes by Clarion quarterback Ben Fiscus, who finished the game with a 12-of-30, 137-yard passing performance. Jon Reid caught six passes for 52 yards to lead the receiving effort.
Complementing the Endres-led passing game was a 148-yard rushing effort led by a 13-carry, 84-yard performance off the bench by sophomore running back
Jimmy Zubik. Junior RB
Akeem Satterfield, the No. 5 rusher in the PSAC, aggravated a leg injury during the week and had 64 yards on 17 carries Saturday.
Hidden in the shadow of the big numbers recorded by Endres and Co. was the fact SRU's offensive line did not allow a sack.
The Rock, who committed five fumbles in the game but only lost one, dominated in time of possession by a 41-19 margin.
SRU opened the game on an ominous note as they committed two fumbles on the opening drive, the second of which killed a potential scoring drive at the Clarion 4-yard line. Endres and Satterfield never connected on the handoff and Clarion's Nate Sipes dove on top of the loose ball with 9:21 left to play in the first quarter.
The first miscue came on the opening play of the game, when junior center
Austin Fedell's snap rolled back to Endres, who then allowed the ball to go through his legs. Endres was able to pounce on the loose ball at The Rock 28 for a 12-yard loss.
The opening drive ended at the Clarion 3 when Endres lost the handle on a snap and Clarion linebacker Nate Sipes pounced on the loose ball.
The Rock again threatened to score on its second possession, but again shot themselves in the proverbial foot and again came up dry. This time, though, Clarion took full advantage of the Green and White's self-inflicted wound. Stimac picked off an Endres pass inches short of the goal line and returned it 100 yards down the sidelines in front of the Clarion bench for a touchdown to give the guests a 6-0 lead with 13:59 left in the second quarter. In a play fitting for the early action in the game, the snap from center on the extra-point kick attempt rolled through the holder's hands to negate the try.
Continuing their self-destructing routine, The Rock were called for false-start penalties on the back-to-back fourth-down plays at the Clarion 27 and were forced to punt on their third possession of the game.
The Rock again moved to the Clarion 10 on its fourth possession, but again stalled and were forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal by junior kicking specialist
Kurt Brackman. That made the score 6-3, Clarion, with 5:44 remaining before halftime.
SRU finally found the end zone on its fifth possession. Endres hit Goda for a 32-yard TD to cap a nine-play, 89-yard march. Brackman's extra-point kick was good and The Rock held a 10-6 lead with 1:16 left before the intermission.
The Rock defense held Clarion to a three-and-out on the ensuing drive to force a punt and give the Green and White offense the ball once more before halftime. The attack squad made the most of the opportunity, moving 38 yards in six plays to set up a 30-yard field goal by Brackman with :02 left to play that extended the hosts' lead to 13-6 at the intermission.
Halftime statistics showed The Rock with a 294-60 total yardage behind 190 passing yards on a 14-for-19 effort by Endres and 104 rushing yards. Zubik gained 56 yards on five carries and Satterfield had 54 yards on 12 carries.
Clarion had 39 rushing yards on 10 attempts and 21 passing yards on a 1-for-9 effort by Fiscus.
The Rock began the second half in the same fashion it closed out the first 30 minutes as they marched 85 yards in 14 plays and ate up over five minutes of time on their opening drive to extend their lead to 20-6. Endres connected with Gardner for a nine-yard TD to cap the drive.
Clarion refused to go away quietly, though, and pulled to within seven points, 20-13, on a 34-yard return of a blocked punt by Deitrick with 9:48 left to play.
Undaunted, The Rock offense came right back and, spurred by a 32-yard squid-kick return by Thompson, moved 33 yards in nine plays to push the margin back to two touchdowns. Endres hit Gardner for a two-yard TD to cap the drive and Brackman booted his third PAT of the game to close out the scoring.
