Rock falls 30-24 in overtime at Bloomsburg

Slippery Rock rallied back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter before falling 30-24 in overtime on the road at Bloomsburg in the season finale Saturday.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team closed its 2025 season with a 30-24 overtime loss on the road at Bloomsburg Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game from Redman Stadium.

The Rock rallied back from down 14 points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24-24 and had two drives with chances to score the winning points in regulation, but could not convert. The second of those drives resulted in a 39-yard field goal attempt with six seconds left, but it missed wide left to send the game to overtime.

Season-highs in penalties and penalty yardage (12-for-109) hurt The Rock all day and continued in overtime when SRU was called for a holding penalty on the first offensive play of the extra session. Behind the sticks, SRU could not convert and turned the ball over on downs. Bloomsburg capitalized with a one-yard touchdown run on its possession to pick up the win.

The Rock close the year with a 6-4 overall record while Bloomsburg closed its season with a 3-8 overall record.

Slippery Rock struggled to move the ball on offense and while having trouble getting off the field on defense early in the game. The Huskies held the ball for more than 20 minutes in the opening half, limiting the SRU offensive possessions on the way to building a 17-7 lead at the break.

The Rock offense looked much sharper in the second half and opened the third by marching down the field with some big runs from JayJay Jordan, but stalled out inside the 10-yard line and had to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Kevin Roberts to cut it to 17-10 with 10:50 to play in the third.

Bloomsburg responded, taking advantage of a pass interference call on SRU to keep a drive alive before scoring on a nine-yard TD pass to extend the lead to 24-10 with 5:16 to play in the third.

Slippery Rock was intercepted in Bloomsburg territory on the next possession, but The Rock defense forced a punt and the offense struck quickly on the next series with DaOne Owens hitting Xander McClure for a 69-yard TD pass to cut it to 24-17 with 13:52 to play in the fourth.

The Rock defense forced another punt and the offense struck again with a big play, this time with Jordan breaking free for a 55-yard TD run on fourth-and-one to tie the game at 24-24 with 7:50 to play.

Bloomsburg was forced to punt on each of its next two possessions and Slippery Rock got the ball back with 2:35 to play to set up a final drive. The Rock moved the ball down into Bloomsburg territory and had a shot at a game-winning 39-yard field goal, but Blake Nicholas' first field goal attempt of the year missed wide left to send it to overtime.

Slippery Rock outgained Bloomsburg 407-370 with 228 rushing yards and 179 passing yards to the Huskies' 230 passing yards and 140 rushing yards.

Jordan ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for an average of 7.5 yards per carry. He also had three kick returns for 80 yards to finish the day with 261 all-purpose yards and finished the season with 1,858 all-purpose yards in just 10 games, the third-most in a single-season in SRU history.

Owens completed 13-of-26 passes for 179 yards with one TD and one interception and also ran for 40 yards on 11 carries. McClure led the receivers with three catches for 92 yards and one TD. Latrell Sutton caught five passes for 50 yards and Vincent Berardi grabbed two passes for 24 yards.

Michael Henwood and Tyler Cain each tallied nine total tackles to lead the defense. Kanye Thompson added seven tackles and one pass breakup and Jett Franz recorded one sack, which was the only tackle for loss on the day for the SRU defense.

Bloomsburg QB KJ Riley completed 22-of-31 passes for 230 yards with two TD and also ran for 32 yards and the game-winning TD in overtime. Gabe Brower caught both TD passes and finished with 79 receiving yards.

Saturday's game marked the end of the 2025 season for SRU, which wrapped up the 16th consecutive winning season for the program.
