SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team's first win was a big one. Four different Rock players scored goals while the SRU defense contained the normally high-scoring C.W. Post offense on Sunday as The Rock defeated the fifth-ranked Pioneers 4-1 at Thompson Stadium.
SRU improves to 1-5 overall with the victory. The four goals scored on Sunday is not only the most goals scored in a game for The Rock since Sept. 22, 2009, but it also matches Slippery Rock's 2010 season total coming into today.
Senior midfielder Samantha Badaczewski and senior forward Katie Krouse each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the SRU charge. Badaczewski score was the 10th goal of her career. Senior goalie Lisa Belcastro made five saves to earn the victory.
Slippery Rock's offensive explosion started early when freshman forward Kaitlin McGinnis scored at the 3:08 mark off of a deflection and Badaczewski assist. The Rock then took advantage of one of its five corners on the day when junior defender Erin Moran scored off of an assist by Krouse in the 16th minute.
C.W. Post (5-2) pulled to within one goal (2-1) when Amanda Nann scored her 10th goal of the season at 20:06. However, The Rock answered right back 48 seconds later when Badaczewski scored off of a long pass from senior midfielder Allie Hartman to give Slippery Rock a 3-1 lead.
Krouse would give SRU a 4-1 lead and cap off the Green and White's scoring for the game in the 31st minute with a goal that was assisted by junior forward Rebecca Coleman
The second half saw the Slippery Rock defense continue to shine as Rock defenders made life hard for the C.W. Post offense by intercepting passes, clearing corners, and ending any long Pioneer runs with poke checks. Neither team would score in the final 35 minutes of play to give SRU the 4-1 victory.
C.W. Post had a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Slippery Rock will be back in action at home on Wednesday against Mercyhurst at 4 p.m.
