Box Score
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Gabrielle Malishchak scored her second goal of the season and Kaitlin McGinnis achieved her first collegiate goal on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Slippery Rock University field hockey team fell 3-2 at #6 Kutztown University.
The loss, which was The Rock's second 3-2 defeat of the year, drops SRU's record to 0-2 on the young season.
Kutztown (1-0) posted the game's first two goals with strikes at the 22:39 mark in the first half and 41:21 in the second.
Slippery Rock would not go away quietly as Malishchak scored an unassisted goal off of a Kutztown turnover at 66:43. Malishchak has now scored goals in Slippery Rock's past three games dating back to the end of the 2009 season.
After a penalty corner yielded a KU goal by Katie Brautigan to push the lead to 3-1, The Rock made one more comeback bid when they drew a penalty corner that McGinnis would finish off with a shot to the left side of the cage to trim The Golden Bears' lead to just 3-2 with 2:45 remaining in regulation. Katie Krouse assisted on the score.
However, Slippery Rock would be unable to force overtime as Kutztown hung on to win its season-opener.
Goalie Lisa Belcastro played the entire game and made 13 saves.
Allison Banks and Samantha Badaczewski each put two shots on goal while Kelly Drumheller made a key defensive save, her first of the year, to keep the game close.

Jemma Gregory and Abbey Sheeler scored The Golden Bears' first two goals respectively while Abbey Sheeler and Labowitz had assists.
Slippery Rock will be back in action next Saturday (Sept. 18) at Millersville. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
