Warning, Jewel lead Rock men to fourth-place at PSAC meet

Chris Warning and Kevin Jewel each won individual titles Saturday to lead The Rock men's track and field team to a fourth-place finish at the PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Chris Warning and Kevin Jewel each won league titles and the Slippery Rock University men's outdoor track and field team placed fourth at the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, which concluded Saturday at West Chester University.

Shippensburg edged East Stroudsburg for the title in a battle that went all the way down to the final two events. The Red Raiders finished with 163.5 points, with the Warriors placing second with 159.5. Lock Haven finished third with 103 points, followed by SRU (72) and Kutztown (66) to round out the top-five.

The fourth-place finish for The Rock is an improvement of one position from a fifth-place showing at the PSAC indoor championships earlier this year.

Warning topped the field in the discus with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 51.49 meters (169'11”). His winning effort was more than 14 feet better than the second-place finisher (154'04”).

Jewel topped the field in the 800-meter run with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:52.23 seconds.

Phil Rector placed third behind Jewel with a time of 1:54.10, while Jason Jamieson also scored in the event with an eighth-place finish in 2:01.29.

Kevin Dustin had a breakout day in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing third with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:23.19.

Ethan Geisler and Dan Hedglin each closed their seasons with outstanding performances in the hurdles.

Geisler placed third in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.91 seconds, followed by Hedglin in fifth-place at 54.50 seconds.

Hedglin also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.21 seconds.


The 4x100-meter relay team of Geisler, Hedglin, Mason McLaughlin and James Sims placed fifth with a time of 42.50 seconds.

Sims and McLaughlin were joined in the 4x400-meter relay by Jewel and Rector to place fifth with a time of 3:17.01.

Nick Kennedy placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 55.89 meters.

Saturday marked the end of the season for the SRU men's track and field team, as only the National Championships remain on the schedule. The Rock narrowly missed sending Warning, Peters and Jewel to the National Championships.
