SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior goalie
Lisa Belcastro made a season-high 15 saves for the Slippery Rock University field hockey team, but a second-half goal by East Stroudsburg helped the No. 4 Warriors slip past The Rock 1-0 Sunday at Thompson Stadium.
With two games remaining in the season, Slippery Rock's record stands at 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division.
Sunday was also Senior Day for Slippery Rock as Belcastro,
Samantha Badaczewski,
Karen Citroen,
Meghan Dougherty,
Allie Hartman and
Katie Krouse were recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the game.
Belcastro's 15-save effort was the sixth time this season that she has surpassed the 10-save plateau. Badaczewski led the Green and White with three shots on goal while sophomore
Gabrielle Malishchak registered two shots on goal. Freshman
Amanda Scheel and Krouse both chipped in shots as well.
East Stroudsburg (15-3, 5-2 PSAC-East), who held advantages in both shots (28-10) and corners (22-8), seemed poised to score an early goal when the Warriors were awarded a penalty stroke just 8:08 into the match. However, Belcastro made one of her many tough saves on the day, stopping the Brittany Kocis shot and keeping the score tied 0-0.
As the first half proceeded ESU continued to be the aggressors with numerous shots and corners. But the Slippery Rock defense was able to step up and make the necessary stops in the first half. The Warriors had one of its best scoring opportunities of the day denied when junior
Erin Moran defended an open Rock cage with a crucial defensive save with just 1:37 left in the period to help keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
The Rock finally surrendered the game's only goal at 43:59 when Joanna Reckley scored her sixth goal of the season to give East Stroudsburg a 1-0 lead. Kocis was credited with the assist. The two team's stellar defenses continued to dominate the half, but with under four minutes left the SRU offense managed to mount one final charge. However, solid scoring chances from Krouse, Malishchak and Badaczewski were all thwarted by ESU goalie Maureen Ordnung as East Stroudsburg hung on for the 1-0 win.
Slippery Rock will look for its sixth win of the season in its final home game of the year at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against No. 3 Bloomsburg.
