INDIANA (Pa.) – The Slippery Rock University women's cross country team opened its season with a dominating performance at the IUP Invitational hosted by Indiana (Pa.). The Rock was led by
Jen Harpp, who won the race with a course record performance.
Saturday's race marked the first official race of the season for The Rock women, who are currently ranked second in the Atlantic Region and 11th in the nation. Slippery Rock easily claimed the team title in the race, finishing with a total of 21 points. Alderson-Broaddus was second with 59 points, followed by Indiana (Pa.) with 68 points and West Liberty State with 101.
Harpp topped the field with a new course record of 22:35.3 over the 6,000-meter course, finishing over one full minute ahead of the second-place runner.
Crystal Burnick finished second overall in 23:46 and was followed in fifth place by Rebecca Younger in 24:28. Freshman
Abby Michaelian was the fourth Rock finisher, crossing the line in sixth-place with a time of 24:31. Jennifer Pace rounded out the scorers with a seventh-place finish in 24:39.
The Slippery Rock men's team was also victorious Saturday at IUP.
The Rock will host the SRU Invitational Saturday, Oct. 3, at Cooper's Lake Campground.
