Rock loses a heartbreaker in double overtime to C.W. Post 2-1

Brookville, N.Y. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team loses a heartbreaker in double overtime Saturday morning, at C.W. Post 2-1. The Rock falls to 1-5 on the season with the loss. 

Within the first 10 minutes of the game freshman Gabrielle Malishchak scored her first goal of the season with an assist by junior Allie Hartman. The Rock outshot the Pioneers 7-5 in the first period, with each goalie having three saves. 

In the second period, C.W. Post took advantage of the 10 shots taken, with seven on goal. In the 62rd minute, Krystal Napolitano scored her first goal of the season to tie the game up at one. SRU's goalie Lisa Belcastro held off two late corner opportunities for the Pioneers to send the game into overtime. 

The Rock had a corner opportunity early in the overtime period, but could not capitalize. At the end of the first overtime, The Rock did not record a shot. C.W. Post could not get any of their six shots past Belcastro. 

At the 85 minute mark of the second overtime period, C.W. Post's Amanda Nann took a shot that was blocked by Belcastro, but on a second attempt, Nann beat Belcastro to the right side to earn her first goal of the season and give the Pioneers the win. 

Malishchak led The Rock with 4 shots on goal. Sophomore Rebecca Coleman and freshman Ariana White both recorded two shots, each having a shot on goal. Belcastro recorded 14 saves in the game. 

C.W. Post led the game in shots 23-10, while The Rock led in Penalty corners 14-11. 

The Rock returns to action Sunday at Adelphi. The game starts at noon.
